What makes a flop song a flop song?

Recommended Posts

The concept of flopping is very much only present in stan culture and pop music fandoms, i personally think most people aren't focused on the charts, they don't have meltdowns over the charts either, they just listen to what they're attracted to and that's it, i listen to a lot of indie rock/dream pop/shoegaze etc and these music communities don't care much about that stuff and you shouldn't either.

Just look at how many forgetten songs have been #1s in 2011 or something and people don't listen to them anymore, you don't need charts to make a cultural impact and be influential. Mainstream corporate record labels, executives and famous artists will always look into underground music sub-cultures to get ideas and exploit it to a much wider audience. A real 'flop' song, is a song that doesn't make you feel anything. Art is very much subjective and entirely dependent upon the culture and expectations of the society/social demographic that the person belongs to. What one social group finds unappealing, uncouth, or even evil might be normal or strongly appealing to another.

Three reasons a song can flop:

  1. It's just a bad song. :gimmemoar:
  2. People aren't checking for the artist, either due to their nasty attitude (Xtina/Demi), recent underwhelming ventures (Katy), or other reasons.
  3. Lack of promotion and radio airplay. (AKA anything Britney post-Femme Fatale)

or GP's lack of taste

or because the songs are too ahead of their time

In my mind, a flop is the opposite of success. There are varying degrees of success or floppery though imo. A true flop would make little to no impact on the charts, little to no impact on culture and end up forgotten/generally unpopular. Some flops have initial success but the big picture shows the floppery in the end.
The term does get overused for sure and usually before we can call something a flop or not. You have to wait and see :tbh:

A bunch of bitter britney stans . :mattafact:

This isn’t even in the Britney section, nor about her. Who’s looking bitter now? :clownery:
