You answered your own question. You don't care which is why this isn't a big deal to you. However, there are countless people who struggle with their identity for their entire lives before finally deciding to live on their own terms. This is SUPER brave and it's newsworthy because it shines a light on something that's widely misunderstood.

Literally everywhere I've seen positive reactions to his announcement except for the (presumably) gay men in the exhale forums...I'm so confused. 

JUNO is my favorite movie and I love Elliot, I wish him happiness in this new chapter. 

Also, the point of they/them pronouns is that they are gender neutral, and are therefore not exclusive to non-binary people. It more or less can serve as a default for when you aren't sure how someone identifies, and for damn sure is a better way to refer to trans people instead of straight up misgendering them.

They have built up anger from not being accepted so they decide to take it out on other minority groups

Altough i don't understand the they-thing, let me tell you: Your comment doesn't help anybody and not a single person at all. I am a trans-supporter, because they feel differently and people should start to respect that, even on an early stage in transition.

I’m a bit confused about one thing, when someone publicly comes out as trans, since their essentially forming a new identity about themselves, do they denounce whom they were before? Like, would Ellen cease to exist? What would it be like for the family? It’s confusing but kinda fascinating to learn about.
