Cancel Culture: How do you feel about it?

Recommended Posts

This is a difficult topic for me, as I've been a victim of discrimination and understand the need for people to get taken to task on the unacceptable things they say, believe and/or do. Though I'm always extremely wary when actions appear to be motivated solely by sadism and the need to destroy an individual. It appears certain groups have weaponized cancelling people and I have a hard time believing in the altruistic motivations that certain groups claim to have. Power is intoxicating for any human being; regardless of the individual. As a lot of the groups who have organized campaigns to 'cancel' someone have often been underrepresented, voiceless, and powerless in the past, I worry that the sudden societal influence and clout that these once systemically oppressed individuals have gained has changed their motivations from an egalitarian agenda to vengeance. Which brings me to my main point. If this is the case, is vengeance justified? Should people who currently hold or once held archaic views be destroyed? Is it justified? Is there a way to balance holding people accountable without the destruction of their personal and professional lives? And do you participate in the culture of cancelling individuals? What do YOU think?

I think unhappy people get off on bringing others down. I can't imagine myself being that miserable and pressed over someone's life that I would feel the need to tear them down constantly. :imacat:

Preach. I have very little sadism in my set of my behaviors... so the whole thing is baffling me. I don't understand cruelty.

has 'cancel culture' ever worked anyway? :clownery:

the thing is that usually, the people who are 'cancelled' are most of the time not hateful persons, what they say was just inappropriate and they eventually learnt a lesson about it. they're not real x-ists, you know? the funny thing is that these people are acting as if they have never said anything bad, ignorant or inappropriate :clownery: sure :clownery: why are people expecting celebrities to be perfect? how many tasteless jokes have I heard coming from people who just wanted to make... a joke? or have a different opinion without being attacked (discussion > insults) with 'transphobic' 'racist' 'homophobic' qualifications. lol :wonka:

keep blacklisting & cancelling people that are actually supportive of a cause for ****ty details, and you'll see how it'll eventually turn out :quirkney:

me neither  I'm feeling bad every time I see a person crying, even in movies when they're the bad ones :selenerz: idk, maybe it's their vulnerability and humanity resurfacing that hits me :selenerz:

People will have to realize.

#1. This generation doesn't care what you did, or who you married to.

If they f with u, their set for life..

Example Nicki's marriage would cancel her in the 90s, but not today.

I think Because of Acts like Madonna, Prince, Marilyn Manson,  etc.

There really is no more envelope to push, or taboos to really shatter the glass ceiling.

Even Madonna said back in 2015, The Kiss with Britney wouldn't be so controversial as it was in 2003.

Hell Janet's nip slip, had this been done in Europe she wouldn't have been cancelled or force an apology, But because it happened in the US, she unfortunately did get cancelled.

In my honest opinion,  you can cancel whoever you like, But you can't tell the world to cancel Camila,  Michael Jackson,  etc.

It don't work that way.

You have the power to cancel themselves just for you, but not the world, cos what affects you, probably doesn't affect others how they feel.

Well, don't commit crimes ... and nobody will cancel you or something similar.
It is essential that people know what people and artists like Woody Allen, Roman Polanski, MJ, Kirk Douglas, Dustin Hoffman, etc. have done, that these people are artists does not mean that they have a free pass to harm people and not have consequences, that people are at least aware of their actions, so if they do not want to judge, it is in their conscience.

I don't think what happened to Janet would have been so shocking to Europe but Janet has not sold out  a concert in Barcelona, for example, at its peak.

personally it depends

i think its good people are becoming more aware that actions and words HURT and that racism, assault, sexism, etc should no longer be just dusted off as it is nothing

but i dont agree with all cases and feel some people take it too far, for example, lana del ray made a very educated post talking about how she is slandered for her artistry and lyrics even tho people dont take a minute to understand them, but all people saw that she was name calling and attacking women in the industry esp poc which just wasnt true, and people really tried to cancel her for that? as if that worked, she has nothing to be sorry for.

But celebs that make vile continuous racist homophobic comments need to be called out and take accountability. for example shane dawson and jeffree star espicially

It's just a buzz phrase that no longer has any meaning. I mean, Nicki's more successful than ever right now despite being cancelled like 100 times back when Queen was released and after all that ****ery in the months after that when she married a ****** PDF file. Clearly justice doesn't really exist.

To be honest it’s wicked annoying.  The world is too sensitive today.  You can’t even make jokes without offending someone.  I am also a very sympathetic person when I need to be, but I love me a good joke.  The irony is that I like a good joke but can’t stand cancel culture, which is just that; a joke.happy joaquin phoenix GIF

Sometimes it can get out of hand and be really unnecessary , but in general I find it good when people are standing up for justice and canceling rapists/pedos/racists and all these kind of people who are very bad examples for society so we need to denounce them of course , in the past people could get away with crimes and we kind of normalized them , so it's actually a good thing people are waking up and shaming people for commiting crimes.

We've all done stupid **** in the past, but the difference is whether you learn from your mistakes or not. Educating someone is fine, but cancelling someone is not (unless they're Chris Brown / R. Kelly levels of gross). :lessons: My explanation is that these people are either super miserable or they want to feel like they're part of something bigger, like they have a purpose (or a combination of both). It's sad and lowkey pathetic... :idkney:

I think if people are so caught up in what they see online, they should switch their computer off for a day and go outside :cackling: get a

I don't think it's computers, etc.

But what's this outside,  most states aren't allowing us to go outside due to the pandemic. So people are just bored since most are laid off from work.

Good topic. Here’s how I feel...I blame social media for cancel culture. Why? Because social media has given us all our mini platforms or “worlds” that allows us build a perception of what others should think about us. Think about it...how many times have you seen a hottie in a mankini on the beach and thought ‘wow, I’m fat & my life sucks’ or seen an influencer in Paris dressed in designer clothes and thought ‘i’ll never achieve that success’. Social media has allowed us to build what we all think is our ‘perfect life or perceptions’ when someone isn’t perfect or makes a mistake we allow ourselves to attack this person or cancel them.

Are there folks that should be ‘canceled’ YES! It does go a bit too far and the amount of suicides I’m starting to see in the news isn’t a coincidence. In the end...cancel culture and the idea of perfectionism on social media is why I deleted ALL of my accounts. To any young folks on here...don’t believe everything you see on social media.

I hate this whole “virtual vigilante.”

Twitter is full of self-righteous, egotistical attention seeking people that jump on to this cancel culture because they are so bored in their own little lives that they want to feel like they are part of something, not even because they actually understand fully the situation they are even voicing an opinion on. It’s bull.

A good 80% of these people wouldn’t even dare to voice an opinion like this in the real world. It’s just too easy and convenient to jump on the bandwagon virtually.
