What led Britney not to perform at the VMAs in 2011?

2011 was really bad time for her (something happened) before she was fire, after Femme Fatale was released something **** went on.

I hope there is something in the book.

Something went wrong, and these are like 2 different people. ( It looks like they have drugged her. )

I noticed how drugged she looked and sounded then, and it was so frustrating because fans were saying it was because she was almost 30 and your entire personality changes then. I was 20/21 back then, but I even knew that was BS.

Totally, it's like they put her on something new that completely zombified her. :wontcry_tears_crying_sad:

prior to Britney, the most recent was in 2006. Hype Williams was the recipient. He is music video director, so of course he didn't perform.

Before that we have Duran Duran in 2003, they didn't perform.

U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Beastie Boys in 2001, 2000 and 1998 respectively. They did perform, but they were like any other normal performance of the night.

LL Cool J in 1997, he didn't perform.

If we go farther back into the 90s and 80s, they usually performed, but again, it was just like normal performances, not a big medley or anything.

Hmm interesting. Seems Justin may have set the precedent for the video vanguard recipient to have a massive performance.

Artists have been performing medleys at their tributes for as long as pop music has been around. It's up to the individual artist if the want to perform or not. Britney clearly did not. Justin did not set a trend either, like what.

After the 2007 VMAs, she lost a lot of confidence in performing and the pressure of performing on national television at such a large event is probably something she didn't want to put up with.

Well I know that. But I was referring to the video vanguard award specifically. It does seem Justin was the first artist to receive it to do a massive medley of hits and artists who have since received it in recent years have followed suit.

Haven’t we already found out she was heavily medicated at the time? Face change, weight gain, all signs of trying out different medications. Nothing wrong with that, but it was a sign.

So you just contradicted yourself?

Just say Britney didn't want to perform and go. No need to do mental gymnastics lol.

they didn't perform because of the award, they performed just because they had songs to promote and so happened that they also received the award that night.

It's as if Britney had just performed Till the World Ends or I Wanna Go, or any FF single, because it was her current era, just like any normal performance, not because she was being the recipient of the award.

Justin Timberlake was the first one to make a big deal out of it with that huge medley and bringing NSYNC and stuff, and the following artists followed suit, except Kanye. It's not like it was a tradition and Britney just skipped out of it.

Even back then, as someone said, the rumors about Miley, Selena and Demi performing for Britney was what was going strong. No one expected Britney to perform any medleys on her own tribute, that wasn't even a discussion. It wasn't until Justin and all the following artists did so, that now people look back and wonder why Britney didn't start it, but she had no reason to.

they were doing an image cleaning on britney after 2007 and performing wouldn't have helped as some here mentioned, she wasn't in her best state.

Also I think that this is when they started to place her more as a nostalgia act and more of a 2000s throwback rather than an artist who is still peaking in a different era, big mistake if you ask me cause she was still breaking records in 2011, and having her look like a washed up artist insted of someone who had many things for future to come set the scenario for how things developed in 2013, album flopping singles flopping and a vegas residency which we could debate it was a smart move since everyone started doing it after her but at the time doing vegas was seen as your career being over, and as much as it was iconic and everything, britney spent the last years of her 30s inside a casino in las vegas insted of evolving her sound and her artistry which would've gotten her much more respect in the industry and the GP. they made weird, cash-grabbing, money hungry choices on her behalf and (ruined?) many opportunities for her.

I thought it was obvious that during the Circus era they had promised her the c-ship would end after that, that's why she looked radiant and looked like she actually enjoyed performing and touring.

Then with the Femme Fatale era they told her she had to stay in it and she obviously lost her joy in working and performing. With the Femme Fatale tour and the possibility of the X-factor contract and a residency in the future, her team still wanted to invest enough money into the era at the beginning, hence why she was booked for a lot of promo performances. But by the end of the Femme Fatale era (by the time I wanna go had been released before the summer) that started to get watered down since the album and tour that was about to start already sold well, there was no reason to invest in additional promotional performances like the VMA's that take place in august.

All of the other VMA performances happened in the beginning of an era, when there is a need for promo. Simple as that.

I thought the medications started happening sometime after Circus and during FF. FF was when her eyes started to look empty.

Well they're obviously going to give the award to someone who's currently active and still somewhat relevant in the industry. I think Eminem is long overdue for this award but he isn't really active in the industry right now so they're going to give it to someone who is.

This is what I don’t get about MTV. We have multiple talented artists from the past that could take it.

It shouldn’t have to be someone that’s currently active.

Eminem would be great, I’ve always said they could do older artists. Backstreet Boys, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Usher, Blink-182. They all had memorable videos.
