I think it was typical of bubblegum pop of that era and that the record label must have somehow thought it added to that innocent sort of image that they had at the time. I remember Jessica Simpson and Mandy Moore doing it as well in their video clips. It's almost like the label told the director or vice versa that It would somehow help with that image
