Little Mix’s Leigh-Anne puts Camila Cabello on blast for her racist past

Recommended Posts

Camila disrespected multiple races but her main source of degradation was Black people. So when non-Black people are so quick to forgive for racism that is not directed at them no matter what was said or when it happened is disrespectful and it happens all too often in our society. The things that she posted disrespected and degraded me, they disrespected and degraded my mother, they disrespected and degraded my father, they disrespected and degraded my sister, they disrespected and degraded everyone in my family, everyone in the black community. If you feel as Black people that we should collectively forgive her for disrespecting us because it was in the past, she was young and she has since given vague apologies, lets all agree to that. If you are not apart of the Black community please tell us how we should feel when someone disrespects us but has since been forced to vaguely calm down her rabid fans from attacking her former Black band mate and someone who openly used racist rhetoric and terms repeatedly online. But of course she was a teenager so it doesn't count, right? ...Right?

I believe in forgiveness but I also don't believe we should be elevating or giving racist or former racist a platform. It's 2020, we're cancelling racist! That goes for past racist, current racist and future racist. That girl got practically no repercussions for her actions. Seriously, a few days later the GRAMMYs turned a blind eye and let her keep her prime performance spot. Hollywood continues to give this extremely problematic performer a platform. She'll also be starring in a remake of Cinderella next year. All her endorsements are still intact. Not one dropped her. I can't turn on the TV without seeing one of her L'Oréal commercials. She's untouchable because the general public has decided they love Havana ohh-na-na  so much they could never dream of holding her accountable for any of her wrongdoings. It's sad being Black and having to observe that your being is criminally undervalued.

As unfortunate as my answer will sound, do you know how many teenagers say stupid things? I'm not sure about the timeline of this whole thing, but I don't think Camila should be constantly pursued for things she has said years ago, when she was clearly uneducated on the subject. Is she still perpetuating this sort of behaviour? Has she continued past her teenage years to act as such? Of course, the line is so thin between being 20 years old and 21 years old. You don't suddenly become incredibly aware of what you are doing in the lapse of a year.

I understand that we are living in a time where people want reparations for ongoing trauma, and I do share part of that feeling... But I feel like we are creating a bigger problem by immediately punishing people. I grew up in a househould where punishment, psychological violence and physical violence was everything that I knew, and it took me years to undo these irrational fears of people and I still face ongoing trust issues with new people that I meet. What I'm trying to say here is that we can't just cancel everyone. This is not how people grow. It's one thing to choose to remain a bigot for the rest of your life, and for that you have to accept the fact that you will likely be removed from society or punished, but I can't believe we can just punish anyone for a LIFETIME for things they may have said when they were younger, perhaps uneducated or just flat out... STUPID. Especially, knowing that studies show that teenagers often engage in behaviour thought to be extremely risky simply for reactions, and irrational behaviour due to hormonal unbalance.

This makes no sense. We have to find better ways to educate people, or else we will perpetuate a circle of violence, eternally.

I love Leigh Anne and I think she’s well within her rights as a woman of color to say how she feels. Everyone on this thread who is saying she should leave it alone, if you’re white (like me) it’s not our place to tell her how to feel. In fact, it’s exactly the reason people are in the streets protesting.
Shea a grown woman sharing her feelings on her peers bigoted behaviors. It may be in the past, and she may have learned and grown from it. It doesn’t however erase the deed.
