dark child versus original — why were there two versions?

Is there a reason why they decided to make two full music videos for the same song? I’m aware one of them is a remix

 

I just feel like going through an entire video shooting with the editing and practicing choreographies and everything that comes with it is a lot of effort for promoting the same song… She could’ve put all this money and energy into an entirely new song/single

 

That being said, the dark child version video is absolutely flawless & I would not want to miss it

But does anybody know why she did both?

They were not released at the same time,  one of them was before Not a girl, the other one was after because of the release date of the movie Crossroad in Europe and in the US.

I think that's the reason. At least that's what I've always believed.

Darkchild remix was geared towards the US market, original for an international market.

yes it was on onyx! I heard that it was supposed to be on domination, I would’ve absolutely loved to see her redo it!!!!

The 2 remixes from the Britney Era were so unnecessary tbh. The originals were the best

Overprotected in the US was catered to urban audiences and the label wanted a remix. Darkchild talked about it

As you say, both are flawless, but I guess the reason is they wanted something more urban for the US. The real question is why didn't the US get the original when it came out in December, and instead went for Not a Girl.

If they wanted something more urban, they could've released Boys right away in the US, or any of the songs like Lonely, What It's like to Be Me, etc. so yeah, it's weird, because the Darkchild Remix isn't even that different from the original to justify the whole investment (and it's inferior imo)

Because Not A Girl was tied to the release of Crossroads in February in the US. 

 

I love both versions -- but the Darkchild video is sooo much better.

Its because US fans complained about "Overprotected" sounding too teen-popish after the album was released, and U.S top40 pop songs were going in a darker-pop direction.

On the other hand, most non-US international markets were still heavily into the boyband/ teen pop sound.

The 'Britney' album was recorded at a time when that teenpop sound was still big, but the album was released when that sound started fading out.

There are major markets if you look close you'll find some of her more pop sounds were singles in other markets like Unusual You which would have killed in the US. I know at this time her label was in a dispute with major radio channels in the US so maybe they thought attaching her name to Rodney Jerkins would catch?

i think the original was the one for the movie, and the remix was more "her" if u know what i mean. Plus Darkchild is a Don producer, why wouldnt she wanna release a remix by him. He did her Oops Remix too 😍

True. And both J.Lo and DC released full remix albums. Idk, maybe she liked the remix version so much that she took the effort to shoot a new video for it.

hahaha it’s been too long, I saw onyx hotel live and never rewatched again after or before.

i hated the remixes of all the songs I’m a bit of a flop
