yeah, I was surprised too when I heard it for the first time.one of my friends went to america with work and travel and she says that some basically think that we are all arabs living in turkey or that our culture, language etc are totally the same.she had to explain to them that we are not the same although there are some similarities because of islam.

U know i "ve been in USA with work and travel too. One american girl  asked me if Russia is continent. And i am not trying to be rude but it was just such a strange question for me. I believe she was 16.and we already had geography in school at that age.

I don't wanna laugh because my geography isn't good either but it is too much even for me.she must have heard about russia somewhere.
