According to MRC data Britney is one of the ten most known artists in the United States with over 80% of the population claiming to know her

Women’s History Month is in full swing with today, March 8th, International Women’s Day. A celebration of social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. And when it comes to music, women from all over the globe are a force to be reckoned with.

 

Our newest product, Artists & Genre Tracker, found that of the 10 best known artists in the U.S. 8 are women. Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and Beyoncé own some of the top spots with at least 80% of the U.S. population knowing who they are. Only Justin Bieber (at 80%) and Kanye West (at 77%) score close to those levels. Plus, more than half of those aware of each woman artist tell us they like them (likability scores ranging from 52% for Britney Spears to 62% for Jennifer Lopez), while likability is trailing far behind for the male artists - Justin Bieber at just 34% and Kanye West at 27%. 

 

Female artists from around the world have broken through and are building momentum in the U.S. -  Dua Lipa (UK), Blackpink (South Korea), and TEMS (Nigeria) to name a few. Excitement for global music is likely to continue in the U.S. - 55% of music listeners want to hear music from global artists on streaming services. 

 

Dua Lipa has nurtured a large, passionate fan army. With over half of the U.S. Gen Pop aware of Dua Lipa, 44% of those aware agree that she is a trendsetter and 82% of her die hard fans say they would tune in if she performed. She’s not only hit nearly 8.3 billion streams globally in 2021, but she became the first female artist to have the U.S. #1 most streamed song of the year  (“Levitating”). 

 

K-Pop’s biggest girl group Blackpink has 14% awareness in the U.S. Blackpink can have a real impact with 64% of fans saying that the group’s opinions matter to them.  And there are lots of opportunities to engage these fans; for example, 66% agree that they like it when their favorite artists release music outside their genres. Blink (Blackpink’s fan army) gravitate toward streaming outlets - the share of music time fans invest in music streaming is 73% higher than for the average music listener, which propelled Blackpink to be among the twenty most streamed artists globally in 2021, despite not releasing an album last year.

 

TEMS is a newer, more emerging artists in the U.S. and is well-positioned to tap into the growing global popularity of Afro Pop. While TEMS is still introducing herself to a stateside audience with just 3% awareness in the U.S, her fanship is small but mighty. Of those who have heard of TEMS, the attribute that’s most likely to come to mind is “edgy”. Her likability is well over 50% and overall influence score 57/100. Though she hasn’t yet hit the top ranks on charts (yet), her songs were streamed over 200m times around the world in 2021. 

 

Woman artists are growing and building their careers within the music industry with great success despite the unique challenges that women artists face. Whether it's following on social sites, live streaming, downloading a song, or playing the latest video, let's use this day (and month!) to show all those fabulous women artists just how much we respect their work and contributions.

Of course, considering britney hasn't done anything big musically from like 10 years and doesn't have big social media presence like JlO or Beyonce, britney is shining and thriving we love to see.

She's very well known everywhere and this is not even the stan inside me talking. While some countries only remember her from like 1999-2001 they still do know her, unlike most artist that debuted after her. She's literally closer to Madonna and MJ in fame than artists like Gaga/Taylor Swift/Beyonce who are pretty unknown in some major music markets outside of US. (no shade just facts)

@Stannedforeverthis is absolutely true actually, here in asia also even 80 year old knows her I think this also because of no internet era Britney used to in papers everywhere, MTV etc etc she registered people's mind and never forget 2007 and then freebritney movement. Britney hasn't done anything big musically since ages but people know her hits this absolutely marks a legendary career for this women! Not many would like to know but most included in this list are only relevant into a single ot double generation and that's it. Stars like Britney have registered Many generations.

 

I would also like to thank tiktok and freebritney, young people eating her music up and freebritney giving her the respect she deserves. 2022 is her year with many more to come.

Well Katy was only big for two years. Why is J lo on the list but Rihanna isn't? I guess j. Lo's movies are hitten and Rihanna didn't hit at the right time to reach old people because TV and magazines were fading in 2011-2012 when she was the biggest. But she was on the radio non-stop then. I guess the innocent young virgin always hits in every culture every age group. Whoever came up with Britney's Lolita image in the late 90's needs to be inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of fame.

True, my mom is old and doesn't know Rihanna. But sure knows Britney and JLo.
