Even if the camera were not HD, they would film high bitrate videos (masters) which would allow to make a really clean upscaling (which is not the case here).

HD recording was not really possible back then. Except if they used film cameras (which only a Hollywood movie budget could afford). TV and low budget movies almost exclusively used DV cameras which could only record 525p.
