£4 million upfront is NOTHING.
A Taylor Swift video alone costs 7.

That's because TS brings in the revenue. You just can't compare the amount of work she puts in and success TS is having at the moment with the amount of effort we believe Brit would be willing to put + the level of success she would achieve with said amount of effort. Also budget for music videos have nothing to do with advanced so you're comparing apples to oranges.

Spoiler

Also I just want to make clear I'm not criticizing Brit on any level, I'm just trying to see things how executives would see it and when TS comes into play comparing an artist at the top of her game, probably going through one of the most successful tours of all times and is obviously highly active with Brit that is going through another moment of her life and career and has other priorities and has done more than enough for the industry and her legacy and has nothing else to prove.

Almost every single released nowadays receives basic playlisting on Spotify and radio deals. However, in the case of this one, it was significantly below the average. It's not about whether the song is good or bad, or what we, as fans, think. The rollout was absolutely terrible. Period.

You're missing a key part here; "fans" were actively pushing narratives before we even had a snippet, and they stuck. People tuned out before it was even released. Britney has released several songs to little to no promotion or roll outs and to varying degrees of quality and they're judged based on the song alone. The response was mixed upon release but the level of misinformation and active attempts to sabotage cannot be disregarded, simply because there wasn't a radio deal.

Who cares what fans think about the song? It's about general public, Britney fans really don't have that much power anymore to decide about the song's success. We live in streaming era and it's all about Spotify playlisting, TikTok and radio deals. Whoever was responsible for this rollout did a terrible job. Fans not liking the song obviously didn't help but it really doesn't matter as it could have become general public's hit.
