Why did Britney's 2007 VMAs performance end up like it did?

I think lack of preparation.
 

I remember that she was meant to do a performance with Criss Angel but he backed out and they came up with a new routine a few days earlier, but Britney kept skipping rehearsal to party. She also partied the night before and didn’t get enough sleep.

I think it was a combination of her personal life struggles and not realising  she was performing ‘subpar’ as well as nervousness and not feeling 100% on the night of the performance. I think she tried her best though, all things considering.

She didn’t put much effort into it, probably due to not having a team close on her to make sure she rehearsed and all. Not blaming her, but it was lack of effort, lack of team to make sure everything that needed to happen prior to the performance, happened & a trash choreographer, if there was one.

She was drugged out by her team; no one could perform well while being drugged out. She had a lot of pressure on her because of her personal life; the paparazzi didn't help either. Last but not least, one of her heals broke during the performance.

I do agree that the choreo for the performance was not very good. She should have done more ********-based dancing, since it fit the song better. The faster choreos that she has done are better for faster songs, and Gimme More is not as fast as her previous hits. The outfit and hair could have been better too. Her and her management should have put together a black leotard, and she should have gone with her black/dark brown dyed hair.

So nobody is gonna mention the power of media that made it more controversial?

They intentionally took the most controversial photos and even photoshopped it and spun the whole narration and it didn't help that Britney was already going through a spiral in the news.

She could have done it flawlessly, but my take on it - she would still have gotten a lot of bad press about it, because it just looked wrong..

Thisssss, even if she would had gave her 100% energy, the choreo was still awful, the dance was meant to make Britney barely move

Honestly, the choreography wasn’t brilliant either. She would’ve disappointed people regardless of what she did.
