  1. On October 1, 2013, Britney Spears released the Work ***** music video. It was directed by Ben Mor, who also directed Scream & Shout's video. It premiered on the CW Network during the iHeart Radio festival, and later it was published on her YouTube account. The video was shot in Malibu, California from September 7 - 10. Rumors sparked about the costs of the production and editing amounted to $6.5M, making it the second most expensive music video ever, but Ben Mor refuted these claims. According to Britney, some scenes had to be edited out of the video because of their ****** tone. She said about the video: "A lot of *** goes into what I do. But sometimes I would like to bring it back to the old days when there was like one outfit through the whole video, and you're dancing the whole video, and there's like not that much *** stuff going on. It's about the dance and it's about being old school, it's like keeping it real and just making it about the dance. I'd love to do a video like that". In the UK , the music video was banned from airing on music video networks before 10 pm, for displaying "a number of risqué scenes featuring bondage gear and Spears whipping her dancers". The music video reached the 100M views on March 2014, becoming the 4th video on her channel to do so. It rapidly surpassed I Wanna Go video as the most watched on her channel, until it was eventually surpassed by ...Baby One More Time and Toxic a few years later.

The album included her singles We Can't Stop and Wrecking Ball, which had been released earlier that year. Track 3, SMS (Bangerz) featured Britney Spears. It was written and produced by Mike Will Made It and Marz, with additional songwriting provided by Cyrus and Sean Garrett. The track incorporates Euro house, electropop and hip hop genres. The song peaked at #10 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100. Although Miley claimed that she wanted it to be the third single off the album, thank God Adore You was ultimately the chosen one and SMS was never officially a single. Miley performed the song on her Bangerz Tour As for the album, Bangerz peaked at #1 on the BB200 in the US, and it also topped the charts of Argentina, Mexico, Canada, UK, among other countries.

  4. On May 11, 2013, Britney Spears appeared as a special guest host at the KIIS FM Wango Tango Festival. this is when they took the picture that Wikipedia moderators decided would represent her for the rest of eternity
  5. On February 24, 2013, Britney Spears attended Elton John's annual Academy Awards viewing party that is held in Los Angeles in order to raise money for his AIDS Foundation through its high priced tickets given by invitation. She wore a Michael Cinco design, a black sequin dress that showed her toned shape, and she also debuted a brunette hairdo after several years of being blonde.
  6. On December 27, 2013, Britney Spears kicked off her Las Vegas residency Britney: Piece of Me. Originally intended to last for two years, it ended up getting extended through December 2017.
  7. On December 10, 2013, Britney Spears released the Perfume music video to promote the second and last single off her, fan-favorite, eighth studio album Britney Jean. It was directed by Joseph Kahn who had previously worked on the Stronger, Toxic and Womanizer videos, and it was filmed from November 19 to 21 in the California desert and Lancaster. The video portrays Britney and her lover, played by model Alexander Kjellevik, doing several activities like taking a trip at night, walking on the street while the guy flips his middle fingers to the world, drinking a beer on the roof of a motel, bathing in a pool and at some point Britney makes a ring out of a crooked nail and gives it to him as a symbol of love. In 2013, in an interview for ET, she spoke very briefly about handling the situation of kissing a guy in a music video, while having a boyfriend in real life: "[...] we had a discussion about that, you know, it's like, it's really weird 'cause in Hollywood it's so acceptable to just like go and do a movie and make out with somebody and 'cause you're just, you know, flattered to be in a movie and stuff, but I think, you know, some people who are very old-fashioned kind of don't believe in that manner, so um, we're kind of like torn on the whole situation". Later in the video, we see Britney wearing lingerie, in front of the mirror of the bathroom, putting on her Fantasy perfume, when a message from Cindy, played by Alandrea Martin, pops up on the screen of an iPhone. Afterwards, we see the guy and Cindy meeting at a gas station, while Britney is watching them from the distance inside a truck. The guy and his new partner, repeat the same activities we see him doing with Britney at the beginning of the video, while Britney drives away and is later seen crying inside the room of a motel. At the end we see the guy looking at the window, holding the ring Britney gave him. Throughout the video, we see intercalated aerial shots of Britney singing the song while wearing lingerie and her lover's shirt, lying in a mattress, with her man sleeping besides her. Several teasers were released previous to the premiere of the video. Britney shared on Facebook: "We've set a date! Perfume vid will premiere Tuesday on VEVO. Had to dig deep and really play with some acting chops for this one!" After being uploaded to her VEVO account in December 10, the video received positive reviews from critics, but not so much from the fans. The concept and storyline of the video seemed confusing and dull despite the very theatrical overall vibe of the clip. The amount of views it received was very overwhelming, paling in comparison to the massive hit its predecessor Work ***** was. To this day, seven years later, it's still yet to hit the 40M mark. However it did pretty well on the VH1 Top 20 in Latin America, occupying the top position for several weeks. The original concept On December 05, Joseph Kahn, the director of the video tweeted "Sigh I love my original edit no one will ever see. I'm gonna go cry in the arms of a Senegalese hooker". Two days later, he continued: "Internet calm down. I never said I didn't like the #Perfume video. I said I preferred my very different cut but their cut is fine. Jeez. Artists have the right to release their videos the way they want. I'm just a work for hire. It's their money & their career. No worries". Then on December 10 he added: "Wish they'd release the director's cut of #perfume. Britney's performance is unbelievable. A tur artist in it. Game changer. Official cut is a good video as you'll soon see. But it's a true loss not to see what she really did. It's incredible. Beyond other artists. Maybe if your voice is loud enough they'll release it. But other than that, I just needed to tell the truth. Something amazing is waiting". "The DC is a minute longer and there's a very shocking ending. But not what you think. I call it BREAKING BADNEY." In January 2014, Joseph was asked about it in an interview for Videostatic (who had also seen the original video): In July 2014, a person that claimed to be friends with someone working for a production company in Los Angeles leaked through a Facebook group what was supposed to be the original treatment of the video: Joseph Kahn confirmed these claims to be somewhat true, explaining some things were actually changed prior to the filming of the video He also clarified that things like Cindy's phone call were added after he was asked to change the storyline In 2015, in an interview for BreatheHeavy, he talked about Britney and the Perfume video: Tbh, the comments section of the video is mostly positive, it seems that just not a lot of people know about it, or those that do, didn't care to go back and re-watch it after they did it the first time. Footage of the original Make Me... video, which was also scrapped in 2016, ultimately leaked and to me that seemed even more impossible to happen compared to the original Perfume concept, so who knows if the Director's Cut will ever see the light.
  8. On November 25, 2013, Britney Spears released her eighth studio album Britney Jean. Or not exactly, but it was actually put out for streaming for free through the iTunes store and iTunes radio. The official release would come on November 29 in Australia and some European countries, and on December 03 in the United States. Executive produced by will.i.am, with whom she had already collaborated in 2011 on Big Fat Bass, 2012 on Scream & Shout and early 2013 on the remix for the latter, the album features mostly pop and EDM sounds, with a mixture of up-tempo club bangers and ballads. Announced as her most personal album ever, the lyrics talk about a variety of topics, covering aspects of fame and its effects, in songs such as Work ***** and Alien, heartbreaks and breakups in Perfume or Til It's Gone and even touches more spiritual themes in songs such as Brightest Morning Star and Now That I Found You. The album features will.i.am himself on the track It Should Be Easy, rapper T. I. on Tik Tik Boom and her sister Jamie Lynn on Chillin' With You. The standard version of the album leaked online on November 20, days ahead of the planned release date. About the event Britney tweeted: "To those of you listening to the leaks... I hope you love... I made this album specifically for my diehard fans so I'm just hoping every song touches you because each one is a piece of me" The album debuted and peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200, with the lowest first-week sales out of all of her albums since ...Baby One More Time, 107K units. Which was still impressive considering the leak two weeks prior, the week of free streaming and the lack of promo. It went #1 in China and #2 in Venezuela though, reaching Top 15, Top 20 and Top 30 in the majority of the other countries it charted. No more singles were released besides the two that had already been put out before the album release: Work ***** and Perfume. On her documentary I Am Britney Jean, Alien was suggested to be released as a third single eventually, but this never happened. Audio clips for Now That I Found You and It Should Be Easy were uploaded to her Youtube channel in 2014, but nothing happened afterwards. In the following months, several songs of the album were sent to various radio stations across the US for testing purposes. Radio campaigns organized mostly by Exhalers were done in order to request such songs on each of the stations. It Should Be Easy was eventually sent to radio stations in Italy too. Though they weren't released for commercial purposes, official remixes for It Should Be Easy and Tik Tik Boom were issued in early 2014, but they were sent to nightclubs exclusively. Some fanmade CD's are still making the rounds on the internet. Where it all began As early as August 2012, while she was participating on The X Factor as a judge, anticipation for her eighth studio album started to show in the music scene, since this record would mark the end of her recording contract, which was owned by RCA after they absorbed Jive Records in 2011, the original label that had signed Britney Spears. People such as L. A. Reid, co-judge on the show, and Barry Weiss, the former head of Jive, showed interest in getting Britney to join their respective record labels after she was done with "B8". (She ultimately renewed her contract with RCA). In October, "Blackout" was trending on Twitter for the fifth anniversary of the album, to which Britney took notice and teased a follow up to the record with a tweet: "I heard Happy Birthday Blackout was trending earlier... thank u all for loving the album as much as I do. Blackout 2.0?" It ended up being a "Blackout 2.0" indeed, only in the sense that they both failed to hit the Top spot on the Billboard 200 chart, and they both lacked of promo performances or a corresponding tour as the other albums of hers did. Also because they're both fan favorites but anyways... It was earlier that October that she was seen on The X Factor with old collaborator Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins at the studio, while she was receiving a call from Simon. It was denied by her reps that they were working together on new music though, but in early 2013 it was confirmed that even though in early stages, she had started to work with "inspiring producers" like Hit-Boy (who remixed Scream & Shout). will.i.am was also confirmed to be part of the project. Another person denied by her reps was Elijah Blake, who had told MTV in December 2012 that he had spent some time at the studio with Britney: "I would say it's definitely the 'unexpected' Britney in so many ways, in that she's playing with new textures and stomping on new grounds and genres. From talking to her, she's definitely trying to push the envelope this time — and really talk from a more personal point of view, and with Rodney Jerkins by her side, I'm hella excited. You're talking about Darkchild, the guy who changes music over and over again and never runs out of ideas. This album is gonna be crazy!" At the set of the music video of Scream & Shout (Remix) Hit-Boy commented to MTV about working with Britney: He ultimately didn't appear on the album Other collaborators that didn't make the cut were Scoop DeVille and Wiz Khalifa. On her interview with Shape magazine, Britney commented “the record is definitely going to be more hip-hop than pop this time around.” Where it truly began In May 2013, will.i.am confirmed to be the executive producer of the record. In an interview for Billboard he explained a little bit about the process of recording he was having with Britney: According to Larry Rudolph, Britney told him about will.i.am “I want Will to be a central figure in the album; I don’t want to have hundreds of songs sent over.” will.i.am added "Sometimes I’d write songs; some of them came from other people. But Britney wrote a lot of the songs.” (Britney appears credited as co-writer on every single track on the album). "We need to talk about what she's excited about in life. I gotta talk about the things that hurt her. I gotta talk about the things that make her concerned — she's a mother," will.i.am said. "I gotta talk to her about all the things that her fans want to talk to her about. I gotta be the vehicle between her and her fans. We can't do another song about going on the dance floor. Really? Didn't we see a bunch of Britney doing that already? Don't we want to see something that comes from her heart?" Anthony Preston worked with him as associate executive producer. Later that month, Naughty Boy and William Orbit were also confirmed to be part of the record. Naughty Boy however, ended up not taking part in it, due to the tight schedule he had while promoting his own material. In July, Britney also confirmed to have created a song with Sia. She tweeted: "Had an AMAZING writing session today with the beautiful and talented Sia. We wrote such a special song together : ) " About working with Britney, Sia commented "Britney was extremely sweet, she came in with the title ‘Brightest Morning Star’ and told me that’s how Jesus found his way. She wanted to write a kind of gospel song that wasn’t ramming it down your throat." In August, Britney shared the recipe for Album #8: In September, the day of the Desert Performance announcement of her Vegas residency Britney: Piece of Me during Good Morning America, she revealed the still untitled album would be released on December 3. She also revealed there would be a song called Perfume. In October she traveled to the UK and did a bunch of interviews to promote the Vegas show, her single Work ***** and the upcoming album. She revealed the title of the record to Capital FM, Britney Jean At Ellen she explained it was the "term of endearment" her family would call her when "she was bad" Later that month she wrote her fans an open letter and revealed the artwork of the album. ( Standard cover / Deluxe cover / Arabia Saudi cover ) In November she confirmed the tracklist of the album after it had leaked online "Sneaky hackers always trying to ruin my surprises. Here is the TRUE #BritneyJeanTrackList" Before the album leaked in full, some of the tracks had leaked already, such as Passenger and an early demo of Alien. A demo of Tik Tik Boom performed by G.R.L. also hit the net. After it was available, it was very well received by fans, at least for Exhalers Sadly, those old threads are long gone now, but I remember clearly the countless threads done in order to support every song of the album: #TeamAlien #TeamBodyAche #TeamTilIt'sGone etc were the common topics you would see those days. Every song received the fan support to be released as the next single, except maybe Chillin' With You lol Later, the album would be surrounded by controversy, after the leaking of some audios of the recording sessions of Alien, where she sounded out of tune (which William Orbit explained to be just warming up exercises that weren't supposed to be released to the public) and the allegations of Exhale's favorite backup singer Myah Marie to be lead singer on the album instead of Britney. Myah Marie has denied the claims more times than the amount of singles she's ever released: “I am so grateful for the opportunity to provide background vocals for Britney Spears on a small number of her most recent works, I most certainly cannot take credit for her tremendous talent as a singer. She is a veritable ‘living legend’ with a longstanding reputation for excellence in all aspects of her artistry.” A, now iconic, glitch that can be heard in the final version of Alien was also criticized by fans, with William Orbit blaming it on will.i.am's production. "One day the story will.be.told But right now, the future is far too bright to look back". The album received mixed reviews because of how impersonal it sounded to some after the numerous occasions it was stated this would be her most personal album ever. Its sound was also criticized for being a bit dated. To this day, though the album hasn't managed to sell lots of copies around the world, it somehow is the only album of Britney that keeps charting on iTunes on over 15 countries simultaneously in a consistent fashion, 7 years after its release. Be free to share your memories and thoughts on the album, but keep your comments nice or else I'll have to start banning some trolls
  9. On November 4, 2013, Britney Spears released Perfume, the second and last single off her eighth studio album Britney Jean. The song was co-written by Britney, Sia and Christopher Braide and produced by Braide, will.i.am and Keith Harris. Her first ballad to be released as a single in many years, talks about Britney's fears in her relationship, that her partner may have another woman, so she sprays her perfume on him to "mark her territory". In July 2013, Britney revealed through Twitter that she had written a song with Sia. In September, during the Desert Performance announcement of her Vegas residency in Good Morning America, she revealed that Perfume was one of her favorite songs of her then upcoming album: "I love the 'Perfume' song. It's really beautiful. I like that song a lot. It's a ballad." After the release of Work *****, it was announced in October that Perfume would be the second single, after RCA Record's CEO Peter Edge said about the song that "she sings it beautifully and it has a real sincerity to it. And it's outstanding - I think people are not only gonna be surprised but also see another side of Britney." Larry Rudolph, Britney's manager, also commented on the song "a breakup song that's about wanting the next girl to smell your perfume on the guy afterwards. The lyric[s] [are] really unique and she sings the **** out of it." Though it was scheduled to be released on November 5, the song was made available through her Facebook on November 3, and it went on sale on November 4. Upon its release, Dr. Luke revealed he had produced a song for Britney Jean and when a fan asked him about Perfume, he revealed that there was another version of the song on the album, a bit rawer (which would later be revealed to be the Dreaming Mix). On November 19, a lyric video was uploaded to her Youtube channel. On November 21, Britney and will.i.am discussed the song with Ryan Seacrest at the iHeartRadio album preview: She also revealed the perfume she sprays is none of her several Fantasy spin-offs, but pikake The song had a poor chart performance, peaking at #76 on the BBH100, while hitting #22 on the Mainstream Top 40. It went #1 on Ukraine though, and #6 in South Korea. A shortened version of Perfume was performed at her Britney: Piece of Me residency in Las Vegas from the beginning until the 2016 revamp, when it was replaced by the Missy Elliott Medley. A music video for the song was released in December 10, but we'll cry talk about it later.
