For Kanye Fans: What’s the Hype?

I’m not sure if there are any Kanye fans on Exhale, but if there are, maybe you can help me understand something.

I’ve seen that Kanye is releasing a highly anticipated project called Donda, and I believe the livestream is happening now.

I didn’t grow up to his music (I was in elementary school when The College Dropout was released) so I kinda missed the Kanye train so to speak. I never really got into his music as a result (except having listened to Stronger, Heartless, and Runaway).

My main question is: what do people like about his music? I’ve listened to some of it and it’s produced well and some songs are lyrically deep. At the same time, he seems to be a controversial figure and as an outsider, I’m not sure if people are fans of him because they like the controversy, or they like the music. Or both?

If you’ve been a Kanye fan since the beginning, have you stuck around all these years and how has your appreciation for his art changed?

I see some people follow him almost like a cult leader, others say he’s a visionary, innovative artist, while others seem to think he’s a joke as his career is overshadowed by his public/private controversies.

I guess I want to understand the hype around Kanye… If anyone has genuine insight, I’d love to learn more!

Well, I've not been a Kanye fan since the beginning he was a nobody when he started out in my country but I've listened to almost everything by him as I am big fan of hip hop - the thing about Kanye is you can hate him all you want and he is weird in every way but the lyrical and production value he brings to his songs is something other people should learn from I haven't heard Donda yet but he never disappoints like if I think about Eminem he hasn't been able to serve the constant quality like Kanye, Kanye love him or hate him have to agree the guy is a genius and I understand why he has such a dedicated fanbase.

I love some of his music, he’s really talented and one of the best rappers of all time. Do you know why? Consistency, versatility and a lyrical genius. Career/impact wise he’s better than Jay Z. He’s a mogul! What I also love about him is that he always brings the best in Nicki when they link up! Monster is one of the best collaboration of all time and the fact it never won a Grammy or anything is beyond disgusting. Nevermind, Jesus Is King is such a serve and I can’t wait for DONDA!

He was great up until 2013/14. Watch the Throne, MBDTF, and Yeezus are some of the greatest albums of all time and I suggest anyone to give them a listen if you haven’t already. After that, he truly fell off IMO — artistically, as well as his ego getting in the way.

He's a genius, I believe he's still reeling from the divorce, it's not his fault, he knew living in LA wasn't making him happy, I believe kim loves him, and she said she had to file cos she couldn't be the wife that he truly deserves, so even she knew she couldn't live in Montana where her work in mainly in California, so she did her best option.

 

I don't think he's a mess, I don't think he emotionally recovered from the death of his mother, I still don't.

 

Before her untimely death, he took her everywhere on the red carpet like he was the proud son, her only child that actually lived out his dreams, kanye himself almost died as well in a well documented car accident that he had to have jaw wired shut to heal properly. 

 

So I think he's also a great example of PTSD and when it's not properly being worked on..

I guess I never fully grasped why people were fans of the music, since I never had exposure to his music. I think the media coverage of him also kinda contributed to me not voluntarily checking his discography out.

But a lot of people around me claim he’s a lyrical genius and like a next level innovator, so I want to understand!
