I’m not sure if there are any Kanye fans on Exhale, but if there are, maybe you can help me understand something. I’ve seen that Kanye is releasing a highly anticipated project called Donda, and I believe the livestream is happening now. I didn’t grow up to his music (I was in elementary school when The College Dropout was released) so I kinda missed the Kanye train so to speak. I never really got into his music as a result (except having listened to Stronger, Heartless, and Runaway). My main question is: what do people like about his music? I’ve listened to some of it and it’s produced well and some songs are lyrically deep. At the same time, he seems to be a controversial figure and as an outsider, I’m not sure if people are fans of him because they like the controversy, or they like the music. Or both? If you’ve been a Kanye fan since the beginning, have you stuck around all these years and how has your appreciation for his art changed? I see some people follow him almost like a cult leader, others say he’s a visionary, innovative artist, while others seem to think he’s a joke as his career is overshadowed by his public/private controversies. I guess I want to understand the hype around Kanye… If anyone has genuine insight, I’d love to learn more!
