After her breakdown no one expected her to have goo music, nevertheless release music again. So when GM came out everyone was completely floored by how amazing the quality was. It was and is still amazing just like the album.

This. It's truly a fantastic album, but I think a lot of people put it on a pedestal because she released it when her personal life was in total shambles.  As you said, no one expected her to come through with such great music, especially while everything else in her life was falling apart.
