This is why Britney didn't sing live most of the times

In the beginning of her solo career she sang the songs from her diaphragm like on the nsync tour in 1998. She found it easier to belt out songs like born to make you happy etc but in 2000ish onwards she started to sing those songs from her throat area and nasally. Thats when you would hear the cracks.  If you listen to her sing “ the beat goes on” in 1998/1999 it sounds so different to the 2000 version. Also of course harder dancing came into play too.

I think it's a skill, so she would be able to control it if she wanted to

It's a combination of everything.

Dancing, not being able to sound like the record due to all the effects, confidence, risk to her brand etc.

It just made sense to lipsync.

However it is possible, just look at the leaked Femme Fatale rehearsals her mic was on and she was singing for the majority of it and sounded great. Im still convinced she was singing live in the rehearsals here though just to record the vocals for the show, and there was no intention to actually sing fully live during the shows.

I believe when she hit the studios to rehearse for whatever tour of performance it was never really geared towards her singing (that also needs to be part of the rehearsal) it was always about her choreography so overtime they just stopped attempting to add live vocals (and even prerecords...)
