It's not surprising. Old press reports speak of Britney signing the Las Vegas contract as if she had any right to sign anything. The GP believed in her father helping her because press reports confirmed that message. One of the receipts that have popped up in the court papers is "press relations". Her father and his cohorts systematically fed stories to the press.

There may have been a handful of early fans who saw through the deceit. And of course, people who worked with her suspected that it was a protection racket.
