Is this lyric genius or grotesque? Fergie "Big Girls Don't Cry"

Okay...so my boyfriend and I got into a tipsy debate on whether the following lyric is good or bad:

"And I'm gonna miss you like a child misses their blanket"

I think its GENIUS because it references a particular type of sadness and longing that I identify with 

My boyfriend says it's GROTESQUE because the way it is worded and the syllables make it sound more comedic than emotional. 

What do you think? I'm not gonna lie - this song makes me cry because that particular lyric reminds me of my cat that I lost and never found out what happened to her.
