Yes, and I think it was a route she was seriously interested in taking.  It's unfortunate she was trashed so bad for her performance in Crossroads.  Like already mentioned, she was basically playing herself but she was so charismatic in that movie.  

But her fame at the time was often looked at as a "fatal distraction."  She lost the role in Chicago because of that reason.
