VMA's 2000 vs. VMA's 2001

Recommended Posts

It’s 2000 for me. Context also matters here: while Brit had had controversial moments in the past for being “racy,” (e.g. her belly-baring in general since BOMT, the Rolling Stone cover, etc.) she was still very much viewed as an artist where you could bring your grandmother to her concert. The 2000 VMA performance, and the moment she tears off the suit, was literally talked about for months. It’s impossible to overstate how jaw dropping people found it. It’s the whole reason she was asked to be the FIRST artist to ever debut their song on the VMAs in 2001. In other words, 2000 literally made 2001 possible.

The snake will be forever iconic and is probably one of the most remembered televised performances of all time because of the iconic imagery. But 2000 is the one that changed it all. I also love the live vocals from 2000.
