GRAMMY Rewind: A look back at the 45th GRAMMY Awards Ceremony From 20 Years Ago

The 45th Annual Grammy Awards were held on February 23, 2003 at Madison Square Garden in New York City honoring the best in music for the recording of the year beginning from October 1, 2001 through September 30, 2002.

No Doubt kicks off the show with an exuberant medley of 'Underneath It All' and 'Hella Good'

Shortly after their performance, the Orange County band win a GRAMMY Award for 'Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals'

Five-time nominee Norah Jones takes the stage to perform 'Don't Know Why'

Shortly after her performance, Kylie Minogue and Justin Timberlake take the stage to present 'Best Pop Vocal Album'. The full list of nominees that year included:
Norah Jones: "Come Away With Me"
Avril Lavigne: "Let Go"
No Doubt: "Rock Steady"
P!nk: "Missundaztood"
Britney Spears: "Britney"
The award went to Norah Jones making it her first win of the night. 'Don't Know Why' would also take the award for 'Song of the Year'.  

Country superstar Faith Hill takes the stage to perform her GRAMMY-nominated hit 'Cry'

Next, we had Vanessa Carlton perform her mega-smash 'A Thousand Miles' with a live orchestra followed by a performance by John Mayer and James Taylor

 

Presented by Kim Cattrall and P. Diddy, a 16-year-old John Mayer takes home the GRAMMY Award for 'Best Male Pop Vocal Performance'.
Cattrall and Diddy also present the award for 'Best Rap Album' which was awarded to Eminem for "The Eminem Show".

Followed by a performance of 'Landslide' by Dixie Chicks, the country trio take home the GRAMMY Award for 'Best Country Album' for "Home"

Coldplay takes to the stage to perform "Politik" 

An 18-year-old Avril Lavigne makes her GRAMMY debut by taking the stage to perform her pop-punk anthem 'Sk8er Boi'

Nelly takes the stage to perform his smash hits 'Hot In Herre' and 'Dilemma' who was accompanied by Kelly Rowland 

Rapper Eve and Fred Durst present the 'Best Hard Rock Performance' award to Foo Fighters 

Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band take the stage to perform 'The Rising'

Ashanti makes her GRAMMY stage debut (with a very forgettable performance that I won't even bother posting :jl_jamie_lynn_awkward_cringe_eek:)

The Bee Gees were presented the 'Legend Award' with a special tribute performance by *NSYNC. The award was received by the surviving brothers, Barry and Robin after the death of Maurice Gibbs. During Barry's speech, he made mention of Maurice's widow Yvonne and their children Adam and Sami, and in a heartfelt, gracious and tearful moment announced that he and Robin were presenting the award to Maurice. It was then accepted by Adam, at Barry's request, on behalf of his late father, his mother and his sister.

Hip-hop mogul Eminem takes the stage to perform the ICONIC 'Lose Yourself' accompanied by Proof

Bonnie Raitt and Aretha Franklin present the award for 'Record of the Year' to Norah Jones for 'Don't Know Why'.
Other nominees included:
Vanessa Carlton: "A Thousand Miles"
Eminem: "Without Me"
Nelly/Kelly Rowland: "Dilemma"
Nickelback: "How You Remind Me"

Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock then take the stage to perform (in a forgettable performance)

Norah Jones takes home her FOURTH award of the night for 'Best New Artist'.
Other nominees included Ashanti, Michelle Branch, Avril Lavigne, and John Mayer.

Elvis Costello, Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters/Nirvana, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Pete Thomas and Tony Kanal from No Doubt perform a tribute to British musician Joe Strummer from The Clash, a pioneer in punk rock and new wave

To close the ceremony, Norah Jones takes home her fifth award of the night for 'Album of the Year' with "Come Away With Me" as presented by Elvis Costello, Michelle Branch, and Peter Gabriel

Norah Jones became the most awarded artist of the night winning five out of six of her nominations. 

To close, the Lifetime Achievements Awards that night went to Etta James, Johnny Mathis, Glenn Miller, Tito Puente and Simon & Garfunkel.
