Mexican diva Thalia turns 50

Recommended Posts

Mexican singer Ariadna Thalia Sodi Miranda Mottola, simply known as Thalia was born on August 26, 1971 in Mexico City.

At age 9 she joined children's group Pac Man, later known as Din-Din to participate in a TV music festival called Juguemos a Cantar, and later in 1986, she would join Timbiriche, one of the most successful pop groups ever in Latin America, until she left the band in 1989 to pursue a solo career.

Parallel to her singing career, she ventured into acting in the late 80's, a highlight being her participation in the juvenile soap opera Quinceañera, and later starring in the "trilogy of the Marías" in the 90's: María Mercedes (1992), Mari Mar (1994) and María la del Barrio (1995), which have been aired in over 180 countries around the world, giving her the title of "Queen of telenovelas" and making her the highest paid actress ever in Televisa, the biggest TV network in Mexico. Her telenovelas helped her music reach non-Spanish speaking territories, such as Europe and Asia, becoming the most widely recognized Spanish-speaking soap star in the world, and even obtaining the legend status in the Philippines. Her last telenovela so far has been Rosalinda in 1999.

After leaving Timbiriche in 1989, she moved to Spain where she hosted the late night show VIP Noche, and then she was signed by the now defunct Melody, who published her first three studio albums: Thalía (1990), Mundo de Cristal (1991) and Love (1992).

She caused controversy with her provocative image and the topics of her songs, as well as the outrageous outfits she would wear onstage.

Then she was signed with EMI with whom she released her next seven studio albums, the first of which gave her her first international hits, including the opening themes of her telenovelas.

In 1995 she released En Éxtasis, which sold over 2 million copies worldwide. The singles were Piel Morena, Amándote, María la del Barrio, Quiero Hacerte el Amor and Gracias a Dios

In 1997 she released a special album for the Philippines, Nandito Ako, recorded in English and Tagalog, certified 3x Platinum there.

Later that same year, her follow-up studio album, Amor a la Mexicana was released, with the song of the same name released as the lead single, followed by 6 other singles including Por Amor and Mujer Latina.

In 2000, Arrasando was released, one of the most successful albums of her career. The singles were Entre el Mar y una Estrella, Regresa a Mí, Arrasando, Menta y Canela, Reencarnación and Rosalinda

Her second self-titled album, Thalía, was released in 2002. Tú y Yo, No Me Enseñaste, ¿A Quién le Importa? and Dance Dance (The Mexican) were released as singles to promote this record.

Following that, in 2003, her third self-titled album Thalía was released, this one recorded in English. I Want You / Me Pones **** was a collaboration with Fat Joe, released as the lead single, peaking at #22 on the BBH100. Other singles were Baby, I'm in Love / Alguien Real, Don't Look Back/Toda la Felicidad, Closer to You/Cerca de Ti and Dance Dance (The Mexican).

Her compilation Greatest Hits was released in 2004, promoting it with the single Acción y Reacción.

El ***to Sentido was released in 2005. Amar Sin Ser Amada, Un Alma Sentenciada, Seducción and Olvídame were the singles off this album.

Lunada was released in 2008 and it would be her last album under EMI. She struggled with the Lyme disease after being bitten by a tick, forcing her to cancel further promotion for this record besides the lead single Ten Paciencia and promo single Será Porque Te Amo, thus making it one of her least successful albums in terms of sales.

However, she would come back the following year, with Primera Fila, a live album, the first one to be released under her new contract with Sony Music. Equivocada, Qué Será de Ti, Con la Duda, Estoy Enamorado, Enséñame a Vivir and El Próximo Viernes were released as singles.

In 2012, Habítame Siempre was released, topping the Latin charts in the US. Manías, Te Perdiste Mi Amor and La Apuesta were the three singles to promote this record.

In 2013, yet another self-titled album was released, Thalía, this time a compilation album exclusive to Brazil, that included 4 songs re-recorded in Portuguese. Estou Apaixonado was the only single, and it featured singer Daniel.

In a surprising turn of events, in 2014 she released her first album for children, Viva Kids. It mostly contained covers of traditional songs for children.

And later that year, she would release Amore Mio, with the singles Por Lo Que Reste de Vida, Amore Mio, Como Tú No Hay Dos and Sólo Parecía Amor.

In 2016, she released Latina, with the lead single Desde Esa Noche featuring Maluma, followed by Vuélveme a Querer and Todavía Te Quiero

Her fifteenth studio album Valiente was released in 2018. Her mega successful hit No Me Acuerdo featuring Natti Natasha appeared in almost 30 charts around the world, and the music video was the first one to reach a billion views on Youtube by a Mexican artist. Around this time, a video of hers that she did during a Facebook Live transmission went viral because of the several things she did during the chat with her fans, leading to the release of the song Me Oyen, Me Esuchan. Other singles were Lento, Lindo Pero Bruto, Qué Ironía, Ahí, Vikingo and Por Amor al Arte

In 2020, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, she released Viva Kids Vol. 2, the follow up to her children's album from 2014. This time, all the songs were new tracks written by Thalia herself.

And in 2021, desAMORfosis was released as her seventeenth studio album. It featured the singles released throughout 2020 plus a few new songs: Ya Tú Me Conoces, La Luz, Tick Tock, Mojito, Eres Mío and Cancelado.

Thalia is Mexican/White, meaning her ancestors were mostly Caucasian but at some point some flava was added in the family tree.

tbh that's the case for most Mexicans, that's why we don't really care that much about race, because even people with darker skin, somewhere up their tree, they must have some European ancestry, it's very small the population that is 100% native.

But that's a whole 'nother topic lol
