It's hurricane season!

Today is June 1st, which marks the official start of hurricane season in the North Atlantic and Central Pacific (the East Pacific season began on May 15). However, we've already had two named storms in the Atlantic (Arthur and Bertha) and we very well could have a third (Cristobal) by tomorrow. The current prediction from NOAA suggests a hyperactive season, with as many as 19 named storms (40 mph). Some forecasts have shown as many as 22. There is a good chance for a La Nina this year, which would mean elevated ocean temperatures in the Atlantic and therefore more (and stronger) storms. 

There is great concern that hurricanes could exacerbate the coronavirus pandemic, given how cramped evacuations are, on top of how cities are already strained in emergency resources.

For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

1. Satellite imagery and radar observations from Mexico show that 
the area of disturbed weather centered near the west coast of the 
Yucatan peninsula is gradually becoming better organized.  The 
disturbance will move west-northwestward over the Bay of Campeche 
later this afternoon where environmental conditions are expected 
to be conducive to support development, and a tropical depression 
or storm is likely to form tonight or Tuesday.  The system is then 
forecast to drift westward or west-southwestward over the southern 
Bay of Campeche through the middle of the week.  Interests 
along the coast of the Bay of Campeche should monitor the progress 
of this disturbance as tropical storm watches or warnings could be 
required for a portion of this area later today or tonight. 
Regardless of tropical cyclone formation, heavy rainfall is likely 
to continue over portions of southern Mexico, Guatemala, El 
Salvador, Belize, and western Honduras during the next few days.

On a serious note, those who are in areas that have hurricanes, stay safe and hopefully this season is mild. Though with how 2020 is going the next hurricane will be irradiated and filled with samurai swords.
