You can't have an album sell less than your last one, but since it's a label switch, their looking at the revenue Mariah did for Sony music, and expecting back to back Number ones,  like she's used to, expecting her to sell 3 million or more, as each album in the 90s had that track record. 

 

What happens if any of that don't happen,  we'll Virgin basically as prince puts it, won't pay her outside the advancement, so highway robbery,  Mariah literally tanked with glitter, and her life was well tabloid headlines for wrong reasons..

Isn't Prince the same person who signed a 6-album $100 million deal with his label in the 1990s based on the premise that all those albums had to sell a specific amount to make it financially viable for his label (and they even gave him a cash advance iirc), then when his sales failed to hit that number his label slowed down his album releases, and Prince played the victim card and called himself a slave despite having knowingly signed a contract giving the label control over his album releases?
