I think conceptually this song is very similar to Kim Petras and Nicki Minaj's Alone which I loved. Both sample very popular house songs from the 90s but use slowed down beats. I like it.

I think if anyone else released this song it would be a hit. I don’t see it blowing up for Katy though. People seems to be over her tired shtick at this point in time!

However, had she released it as the lead single she would have saved herself a lot of (mainly unwarranted) vitriol. Obviously, this was intended to be released as a second or lead single, seeing as the video was recorded early in the year. 

Clearly, Katy caved into pressure from either her label and/or the internet gays to rush release Lifetimes as some sort of last minute song of the summer, together with a hastily made video while holidaying with her family in Spain, and it bombed faster than a giant turd floating towards the edge of Niagara falls!
