Sam was going to lose that trial. Though after he traumated Britney on the stand, the case was going to be thrown out again. That is why he finally settled. And I'm sure the deposition was nerve-racking enough so I can see why Britney did as well.

Settlement means both parties agreed to end the case. Mostly, the agreement goes along with an amount of money from a part to another.
