Did Ashlee and her label really expect "Bat For A Heart" to be a hit?

So a lot of people claimed that this song flopped and caused her 4th album to be scrapped. Do you think they really expected a song like this to be a mainstream hit? It feels so low budget and like a passion project so I really don't understand why such an unconventional song failing to chart would cause a scrapped album. What do you think?

i’ve never heard this song… but i love a darker ashlee to be honest… the songs a bop if you ask me… if i would have known about this in my younger years i definitely would have jammed this… i want her to come back so bad 😭

I wouldn’t even call this a buzz single.  I think it was just something Ashlee wanted to put out for the fans.

So the story goes like this:

Ashlee started working on new music with Linda Perry, and this song is literally a straight recording demo for the song with no editing or mixing. 

It was released under no record label so it was more of an independent gift for the fans, reflecting her after divorce era.

From what I understand, she hasn't had a record deal since Bittersweet World just the one for the Ashlee +  Evan project.
