Its not really about that though, its about the fact that MTV VMAs haven't been anywhere near as relevant as they used to be for years.
Before Britney returned 9 years later, they have tried to get every and any performer to maintain the ratings they used to get when
Britney used to perform almost every single year. Since Britney left, the show ironically hasn't been the same and ratings have dipped more and more.

Another problem IMO: Lack of diversity.

Back in the day, they were performances from almost every genre, Pop, Pop/Rock, RnB, HipHop, Alternative, etc.

I'm sure someone has said this, but these initial numbers don't tell the whole story. The decline wasn't as dramatic once streaming and DVR figures were added.
