26 years ago today, Britney released “…Baby One More Time” as her debut single

“…Baby One More Time” officially introduced Britney to the world, hitting radio stations worldwide in late 1998. Written and produced by Max Martin with TLC in mind (they rejected it for being “too ‘pop”), the track was earmarked by Jive for Britney despite Simon Cowell trying his hardest to secure the track for his boyband, 5ive. The track soared to #1 in 21 countries. The song is one of the best-selling singles of all time, with over 10 million copies sold.

In 2020, Rolling Stone named "...Baby One More Time" as the greatest debut single of all time. Spears led the teen pop pack of Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson and Mandy Moore, who were all seen as "pop princesses" gaining chart success in 1999. These four performers had each been developing material in 1998, but "...Baby One More Time" changed the market in December, opening the door for the others. Rolling Stone wrote that Spears "spearheaded the rise of post-millennial teen pop ... Spears early on cultivated a mixture of innocence and experience that generated lots of cash".

The single also included “Autumn Goodbye” as it’s B-side

Honestly can’t think of a better debut single, it changed pop music forever. Iconic doesn’t even begin to cover it
