15 years ago today on May 24, 2005, Rihanna released her very first single ever, Pon de Replay. The song, meaning "play it again" in Bajan Creole, fuses together dancehall, pop, R&B, and Rihanna's catchy vocals asking the DJ of the club to, well, play it again. Rihanna was only 17 year old at the time of the song's release. Ahh, remember these days when people pronounced her name "Rye-hannah?"
The song peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has been certified platinum two times as of late 2012.More importantly though, the song launched Rihanna to stardom and launched the career of what would become one of the most powerful women in the music industry. Rihanna has since released 8 studio albums and 72 singles. She has become the only female artist besides Madonna to sell over 250 million records to date. And it all started with Pon de Replay.
