  1. The racism has always been prevalent, it's just that we have smart phones to capture it now. It's wrong, and it's my hope that the outrage inspires change. Change begins from within, and that starts by writing out how you feel. I want this post to be a spot where you can write out your thoughts in the comments and feel heard amongst your pop music and culture-loving peers here on Exhale. I know everyones' comments will be respectful and thoughtful of course considering the sensitive nature of this topic. Hope to hear your voice. 🙏
  2. This is why I love Ciara, she's so powerful and GENUINE! Unlike Beyoncé, who whatever she does is staged from beginning to end... (That has always exhausted me about her). So it's refreshing to see another talented artist who can tackle important subjects without being pretentious or be constantly working for her own brand. This, on the other hand, gets the message across without making it feel like it's all about her... And all in 4 minutes, honestly. AND it looks beautiful and full of energy, just like Ciara. I'm white as paper, so it's weird that I'm so attracted to this, but I feel like I can understand the sentiment. The song is great, I love that bass and her vocals! LYRICS: Enjoy!
  3. HBOMAX recently decided to withdraw the movie Gone with the Wind from it service until further notice for glamouring black peoples' struggle during the civil war. In the UK, same has happened with a few series for using ****** and insensitive material. Thanks to the #BlackLivesMatter movement, this is something that needed to be addressed long time ago but; I hope it is more inclusive to movies and series that depict other minorities as well in a bad way and stereotype other ethnicities in a bad light. We all have seen ourselves in Hollywood movies depicted as either the bad guys or too dumb to matter as a human. Do you think all movies/series depicting minorities should be banned or at least come with a notice on how this was wrong and is wrong? Would love to hear from you on how certain movies depict u or ur culture wrongfully and u feel is offensive.
  4. Mariah Carey revealed she had plans to give Lambs some surprises and rarities to celebrate the 30th anniversary of her debut album, Mariah Carey. She posted a letter to fans acknowledging the special day, but implies it doesn't feel right to release new gems while the world is hurting. She's postponing to a later date. "Together, let's bring on a change," she writes. To be honest, I see where she's coming from, but at the same time... what better way to brighten up the world than with some never-before-heard/seen material? There is never going to be an opportune time to share things, at least not in the foreseeable future. Thoughts?
  5. Update: Starbucks decided to reverse their decision. Employees CAN wear clothing related to the Black Lives Matter movement. In fact, they're designing a BLM shirt for employees to wear. "This movement is a catalyst for change, and right now, it's telling us a lot of things need to be addressed so we can make space to heal," Starbucks said announcing the new T-shirt design. This is how a company should handle things They see outrage because of this wrong decision, (though they were trying to protect their employees from potential threats), then made immediate change. Below is the new T shirt design: Earlier: It's a controversial day for Starbucks. Following the news they are closing 400 stores in North America, the company is under fire for not allowing their employees to wear anything related to Black Lives Matter. In a memo obtained by Buzzfeed News, corporate said wearing clothing and accessories that support or highlight the Black Lives Matter could be misunderstood and potentially incite violence. The memo pointed employees to a now-deleted video which its VP of inclusion and diversity explained that "agitators who misconstrue the fundamental principles" of the movement and could use them to "amplify divisiveness." The notice follows Starbucks public support of the Black Lives Matter movement on social media. It's worth pointing out Starbucks previously allowed employees to wear symbols related to gay pride. 6. Justin Bieber admits he's inspired by and has benefited off of black culture. Leave it to Bieber to show some self awareness during this movement. And before the comments go in on him using the N-word in a take of "One Less Lonely Girl," people can change right? Should we forgive but not forget? Exhale, what parts about Bieber's career, whether it's music, words, fashion etc do you feel like he embodied black culture?
  7. The NFL's commissioner Roger Goodell says the league was “wrong” for refusing to listen to players who protested social injustice. Goodell used his statement to not only “condemn the systemic oppression of black people” but admits fault for not listening to its players “earlier.” “I personally protest with you and want to be part of the much needed change in this country Without black players, there would be no National Football League,” Goodell said. This is a huge step in the right direction. Colin Kaepernick deserves to get his job back at the very least. Watch below:
  8. CL offered invaluable insight as a K-pop star, and how it relates to the Black Lives Matter movement. The former 2NE1 singer says the genre is directly influenced by black culture. “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was the first album my dad bought me. Beyonce‘s Dangerously In Love was the first CD I bought for myself. Janet Jackson taught me the power of movement of dance and expression. Missy Elliott is why I am so obsessed with my video visuals. Lil Kim was one of Fashion’s pioneers that taught me how to be fearless in how I tell stories through clothes…Aaliyah is the reason why I still wear baggy pants and combat boots on stage,” she wrote in a statement. “Some of the biggest inspirations for 2NE1 were Destiny’s Child and TLC. These are just some of the examples of the core women who have inspired me over the years. Artists, directors, writers, dancers, designers, producers, stylists in the K-Pop industry are all inspired by black culture whether they acknowledge it or not,” she continued. “I would like to encourage all K-Pop fans to give back and show their love and support for all that we have received from Black artists. I want to explain to all the K-pop fans, fellow Asians, and non-Americans who feel like they have little or no connection to what’s happening that we all are connected at the end of the day. And don’t we, Asians living abroad, also face enough racism to the point where we are numb and sick of it? We must stand up together as one helping them fight for justice. It’s never too late. Let’s send them love and support by caring, elevating Black voices, educating ourselves, and bringing awareness to people around you.” Do we have any CL stans in Exhale? Thoughts on her statement?
  9. Marina Tweeted "You have to be mentally ill to be a cop." I whole-heartedly disagree with her. I don't love how she categorized all police officers into one group. As if ALL of them are racist murderers. There are good, honorable police officers out there with a moral compass. I am aware that this is a bad time to defend police officers, but I don't think it's a good idea to label a group of people no matter who they are. She's equating racism to being mentally ill. That's a slippery slope. The racism in the police force is apparent. The Black Lives Matter movement exists for a reason. There needs to be a seismic shift in how white people and white cops view and treat people of color. Period. George Floyd's unjust death caused outrage for a reason. But calling racist people mentally ill feels reckless to me. I wouldn't be surprised if her Tweet below was removed soon. Update: Including a much more thoughtful response from Marina that she posted on IG, too. Thoughts? Related:
