  3. On March 24, 2008, How I Met Your Mother's season 3 thirteenth episode titled "Ten Sessions" aired on CBS. Britney Spears was one of the guest stars in the role of Abby, along with Sarah Chalke, Marhsall Manesh and Charlene Amoia. The episode was directed by Pamela Fryman and written by Chris Harris, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. This was Britney's first TV appearance since the 2007 VMA's, and it was also the first project she did while being under the conservatorship, which was granted to her father just the previous month. In the episode Britney plays the receptionist of Dr. Stella Zinman (Sarah Chalke), the dermatologist that Ted (Josh Radnor) is seeing for ten sessions to remove his tattoo. Each week he tries to convince Dr. Zinman to date him, even though she warned him the answer was gonna be no. After five sessions he decides to start being nice to Abby to show the doctor his good side, but instead Abby starts to fall in love with him. "Ten Sessions" was the most watched episode of the season, and the only one to surpass 10M viewers. Her participation got mixed reviews from critics, with some praising her acting and others her "change of pace from her latest public appearances". Britney would reprise her role again on episode 19 "Everything Must Go" which aired on May 12.
  4. On March 03, 2008, Break the Ice was sent to US radio stations as the third and last single off Britney's fifth studio album Blackout. The song was co-produced by Danja and Jim BEANZ with additional writing by Keri Hilson and Marcella Araica. This was her first single to be released after she was placed under the conservatorship. In February, the song was announced as the most voted by fans from an online poll at Britney.com, with Toy Soldier coming in second place, and it was released internationally at the end of the month. The song peaked at #43 on the Billboard Hot 100, but it topped the US Dance Club Songs chart. It was also Top 10 in several countries, including #1 in Australia. A remix EP was also released later in the year It's been a while I know I shouldn't have kept you waiting But I'm here now The electro-R&B song started to be recorded when Britney was still pregnant of Jayden James in 2006, and it was finished three weeks after she gave birth. According to Keri Hilson, Britney wanted to focus more on her vocal delivery and opted not to do any background vocals “it sounds like me anyway”. At first it was rumored that she was preparing a music video for a remix of the song that featured rapper Fabulous, and that this was gonna be the version released as a single. However this ultimately didn't happen. In the end, an animated video was ordered, which was released in mid-March. At the time of its release, no promo performance was done for the song, and in the 2009 Circus Tour, a remix of the track was used as an interlude. It wasn't until late 2013 that Britney performed the song for the first time ever during her Las Vegas residency Britney: Piece of Me. The song kept being part of the show throughout the duration of the residency, including the revamped version that started in 2016. It was also going to be part of the setlist of Domination, her second Vegas residency which was cancelled a few weeks before it started in 2019.
  5. On December 02, 2008, the day of her 27th birthday, Britney Spears released Circus, the second single off her sixth studio album of the same name. The electropop song was written and produced by Dr. Luke, with collaboration of Claude Kelly, Benjamin Levin and Benny Blanco. Lyrically it talks about Britney's life and career as entertainer and her relationship with the media and the public that observes her, comparing her to a circus performer. In an interview for Hit Quarters, Claude Kelly commented about how Circus came about: Britney herself revealed to have been inspired by this song to set the concept of the album and her tour around it, it "put the whole album together as far as what I wanted my show to be like. You can play with a circus in so many different ways". The song peaked at #3 on the BBH100, but it reached #1 on the Pop Songs and Digital Songs charts, as well the Canadian chart. It was Top 10 in several countries where it charted. The song was performed the same day it was sent to radio on Good Morning America. It was also the release date of Circus, the album in the United States. It was the opening song of her 2009 tour The Circus Starring: Britney Spears And in 2013 it was added to the setlist of her Vegas residency Britney: Piece of Me, where it stayed till the end of the show, including the Asian Tour in 2017 and the Piece of Me Tour in 2018. The music video, directed by Francis Lawrence was released on December 04.
  6. On November 30, 2008, Britney: For the Record premiered on MTV following the release of Britney's sixth studio album Circus. The documentary film followed her return to the music industry after the personal struggles she had lived the previous years, and the media coverage this got. Produced by Andrew Fried and directed by Phil Griffin, they started the main shooting a few days before her appearance at the VMA's 2008 that September. The format of the film is mainly an interview which was supposed to contain no filters, where she talks about her past experiences from fame and success, to her personal life, including past relationships, marriage, divorce, and several of the highly publicized events of 2007 such as shaving her head or the infamous VMA's 2007 performance. Additional to this, we get footage of her in her day to day life, at home with her kids and her father, we see her preparation for the VMA's 2008, her guest appearance at Madonna's tour, with Madonna herself being interviewed as well, rehearsals, photoshoots, the making of the videos of Womanizer and Circus and some time at the recording studio. She also talks about her music, her feelings towards the fans, but most importantly, something that resonates a lot lately with her ongoing legal situation, this was the first time and, for a while, it was the last time she talked about the conservatorship she was placed under at the beginning of that year: "There's no excitement, there's no passion... I have really good days, and then I have bad days. Even when you go to jail, you know there's the time when you're gonna get out. But in this situation, it's never ending. It's just like Groundhog Day every day." The documentary was one of most watched shows everywhere it was aired: in the US it got a combined total of 5.6M viewers between the two airings of the show; in Mexico it got 4.3M viewers between the two times it was aired; in Australia it attracted 1.42M viewers and in the UK, 391,000 viewers. In April 2009, a DVD was released including the full documentary plus extra scenes that didn't air on MTV. It also included 3 bonus remixes of Womanizer, and 3 remixes of Circus. Despite this film being used as part of the marketing strategy for her "comeback" as well as to promote the Circus album, over the years it's faded into this obscure place with little to no recognition from "her team". It's almost impossible to find it for purchase on the internet, and it's not available for streaming in any official platform. In recent years, it has been brought to attention again because of several of her declarations throughout the film regarding her freedom (or lack of this one) and her feelings towards the people that surrounds her not listening to her, are still true and applicable to her current life, which after almost 13 years, still depends on a personal and financial conservatorship which the fan movement #FreeBritney has been advocating against. You can watch it here or here
  7. On November 27, 2008, the Bambi Awards of that year took place in Offenburg, Germany. Britney Spears performed there her latest hit Womanizer, the lead single off her sixth studio album Circus. This marked Britney's return to the European TV, but it was also her first televised performance since she performed at the VMA's in 2007, a number that was heavily criticized by the public and media. Before this, she had only recently performed as a guest at Madonna's tour. In this ceremony, she was also honored with the Best International Pop Star award, which was presented to her by fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who passed away in February 2019.
  8. So this throwback post is a bit different since it's focused on some events that happened in May that I missed on previous days. Yesterday, it was the 13th anniversary of the infamous picture of Britney known as Neyde. It was on May 23, 2008 that Britney Spears attended Christian Audigier's 50th birthday party. Christian Audigier passed away in 2015 after battling a form of blood cancer. Two years before, on May 09, 2006, Britney Spears appeared on The David Letterman Show where she confirmed her second pregnancy Three years earlier, on May 22, 2003, Britney Spears announced her online charity auction of exclusive memorabilia at the W Court Hotel in New York. Finally, four years prior to this, on May 24, 1999, Britney Spears appeared on The Rosie O'Donnell show. She performed Sometimes.
  9. On May 12, 2008, the 19th episode of How I Met Your Mother's Season 3, "Everything Must Go", aired on CBS, and if featured Britney Spears as a guest, reprising her role of Abby. She had previously appeared on the March 24 episode "Ten Sessions". This episode was written by Jonathon Groff and Chris Harris, and it was directed by Pamela Fryman. Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) finds out Abby has been sabotaging his dates, since a previous episode called "The Bracket" (where Britney didn't actually appear). After confronting her in a taxi, he tells her Ted (Josh Radnor), who she is in love with, dumped him as a friend and they both start bashing him, which leads to them sleeping together again. They try to make Ted feel bad about their supposed relationship, but he's not falling for the trick. Barney pushes it further by proposing to Abby, but she doesn't realize it's part of the joke and believes they're actually getting married. At the end Barney goes to her apartment and tells her they can't marry, because Ted is in love with her. He gives her Ted's address and tells her to stop by at 2:00 AM "because he works late". The episode finishes here with a sort of cliffhanger, suggesting there could still be more to this story, however this would be the last time that Britney, and thus, her character Abby, appeared in the series, so we never get to know what happened afterwards. 10. Who? Nowadays, after urban music has taken over the mainstream radio and became the biggest force when it comes to streaming in Latin America, it's hard to imagine that at some point the Pop genre used to rule the music scene. In the last half of the 00's, RBD was the Mexican band that helped to popularize the teen pop and pop/rock genre even more, and after they disbanded in 2009, no pop act enjoyed a similar level of success as theirs, and then reggaeton and urban music in general took over. In January 2008 they released Empezar Desde Cero, the second single off their fifth studio album of the same name, released in 2007. An extra cheesy and more bubblegum-pop-ish compared to the rest of their discography, it was chosen by the fans as the next single and it has the particular distinction that is mainly sung by Maite Perroni, a member of the band that wasn't featured a lot in most of the songs throughout their different albums, since she didn't really have a singing background as Anahí or Dulce María did. After many years since their music was wiped out of music streaming services, due to legal issues with the owners of the group's rights and the record label, their music catalog was finally made available last week, on Spotify, Apple Music and especially YouTube, where they uploaded lyric videos for all of their songs, as well as the official music videos (some were uploaded, while others were unlocked). One of the missing videos though, was Empezar Desde Cero, which has been uploaded today in high quality. To most of you, RBD might be unfamiliar if you're not used to listen to music in Spanish, and even more a group that's been disbanded for more than a decade, but if you really like pop music, make sure to give it a try: They have a strong fanbase, that is still alive after all these years, and they were the main ones that kept asking for their catalogue to be available again. Last week, they even broke some records on Spotify, with no other promotion than some small Twitter clips made by their members: I miss my teenage years
