  1. On September 9, 2007 the MTV Video Music Awards aired live from The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. It was the smallest VMAs ever held in many aspects: smallest venue, thus smallest audience, they removed 13 of the awards categories, and only 4 performances took place in the main stage: Chris Brown featuring Rihanna, Linkin Park, Alicia Keys and Britney Spears (well, there was a closing medley of Timbaland with Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado and others). Britney opened the show with a performance of her newly released song Gimme More, the lead single off her upcoming fifth studio album Blackout. The number started with the opening lines of Elvis Presley's Trouble that leads to her now iconic phrase "It's Britney, *****!" The original performance was supposed to involve magic tricks provided by Criss Angel. The truth about this original concept is still debated: he commented on an interview for People magazine that Britney failed to supply adequate preparation time, while other insiders claimed it was him who didn't make room for rehearsals. She would return the following year as the biggest winner of the night, however, she didn't perform at the VMAs again until 2016.

  3. On August 31, 2007, Britney Spears released Gimme More as the lead single off her fifth studio album Blackout. It was co-written by Jim Beanz, Marcella "Ms. Lago" Araica, Nate "Danja" Hills and Keri Hilson, while being produced by Danja. The dance-pop / EDM track opens with the now iconic phrase uttered by Britney "It's Britney, *****!" and closes with a spoken outro by Danja. The song was recorded a year prior, one part when she was still pregnant with her second child Jayden James, and then she finished the rest three weeks after her son was born (just a few days before filing for divorce). It was released in the middle of a very chaotic year in the personal life of Britney (which was very exacerbated by the media and paparazzi) and it marked a shift in the music style she had been delivering with her first records. The song peaked at #3 on the US BBH100 and it was top 5 in several countries. The song received a music video that was premiered in October of that year. She performed Gimme More live for the first time at the VMA's 2007 which took place in September (we'll commemorate that anniversary next week). Since then, she included it as an interlude on her Circus Tour (2009), and she also performed it at the Femme Fatale Tour (2011) and Piece of Me residency (first as a part of a medley with Piece of Me and Break the Ice, and later as an independent number). On January 2008, Lil Kim remixed the song as part of her mixtape Ms. G.O.A.T. The song was renamed as "Kimmy More".
  4. But I got depression again I had a meeting at 7, I skipped it and slept in and woke up at 7 PM I cut my hair off like Britney Sprinkle dust like a pixie, wiped my nose like it's itchy I'm tatted up, I don't give a ****, yeah
  5. On December 14, 2007, Britney Spears released the Piece of Me music video to promote the second single off her album Blackout. It was directed by Wayne Isham, who had worked with her in the past for her I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman video. In an interview for MTV, Wayne talked about the concept of the video: He also talked about the fact that Britney arrived 12 hours late to the shooting: In 2008, Piece of Me was nominated at the VMA's for Best Pop Video, Best Female Video, and the most important award of the night, Video of the Year, winning all three of them. This marked the first time Britney won a moonman ever. Britney talked about it in a radio interview saying: "It's a cool video, but I think by far I've done videos that are way better, so I was really shocked that it got [Video of the Year]. It was just inspiring, though, because now, going forward with the videos that I'm doing now, I can really go there and do something crazy and see what happens". By 2008, the website About.com revealed that Piece of Me was the 12th most watched video of all time with 47 million views (times sure have changed since lol ). Originally uploaded to Jive Records channel, it was later removed and submitted to her VEVO channel in 2009, where it reached 100M views on December 13, 2017. There's an International version of the video, which the only difference it has it's extra footage of Britney wearing a short blonde bob wig at the beginning of the video. In MTV Latin America, it landed at #39 on the Top 100 videos of 2008.
  6. On November 27, 2007, Britney Spears released Piece of Me, the second single off Blackout. It was written by Christian Karlsson, Pontus Winnberg (Bloodshy & Avant) along with Klas Åhlund. The electropop song talks about Britney's relationship with the media. Despite the unwritten rule of not writing songs that talked about Britney's personal life, the producers recorded the song anyway and sent it to Britney, who loved it and decided to record it. Piece of Me was actually the last song of the album to be recorded. According to Winnberg, she learned the lyrics of the song in her car while she was heading to the studio, where she finished the song in less than half an hour. Robyn, who also recorded a demo of the song, provides background vocals, alternating with Åhlund the "piece of me's" that we hear in the chorus in a robotized voice, while Bloodshy & Avant sing the "Extra! Extra!". After the album release in October, Britney talked about the song in a small interview she had with Ryan Seacrest over the phone The song peaked at #18 in the BBH100 but hit the #1 on the US Dance Club Songs chart. It was Top 10 and several countries, including #1 in Ireland. She's performed the song in her Circus Tour, Femme Fatale Tour, and her Vegas Residency, which was named after the track, Britney: Piece of Me. In 2008 a Remix EP was released The music video wasn't released until December, so we'll "celebrate" that later
  7. “Baby **** you...” I mean the way she says that line slayed my 15 year old existence and still does. The ATTITUDE. The SASS. The NOT giving a F! We love this Britney. This song has always been intriguing to me. It’s so dark, gritty, truthful....B girl was serving a mood. Anyone have thoughts on this song? Know any fun facts? Memories? Who is it really about? I'd be curious to hear everyone’s opinions. Now there’s another ringing my bell...
