  1. On May 10, 2004, Britney Spears released Everytime, the third single off her In the Zone album. Recorded in November 2002, the ballad was co-written between Britney and former backup singer Annet Stamatelatos (now known as Annet Artani). Britney composed the melody, and the production was in charge of Guy Sigsworth. Everytime went #1 in the UK, Australia, Hungary, Scotland and Ireland, and was Top 5 in almost every other country it charted, including the US Mainstream Top 40, though it only peaked at #15 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song evokes a feeling of sadness through its lyrics, with which Britney is asking her lover to forgive her "... my weakness caused you pain and this song's my sorry". She also describes the suffering she goes through because of his absence with lyrics such as "I make-believe that you are here; it's the only way that I see clear". According to Annet in an interview for Muumuse, Britney and her forged a friendship after the Dream Within a Dream Tour ended in the summer of 2002. When she broke up with her boyfriend, she was supported by Britney, who had also gone through a very public breakup a few months prior. "Basically, we commiserated because she, at that time, had broken up with Justin [Timberlake]. Maybe like nine months before, but of course it was really fresh in the media. I was just breaking up with this guy, so we kind of like—I think we kind of needed each other." In October of that year, Britney Spears appeared at the Versace Fashion Show during the Milan Fashion Week. The house Annet mentions is Donatella Versace's, as Britney explained in this interview: Britney even mentions going back to L.A. to "record a little bit" after the fashion week. In the Muumuse interview, Annet suggests that the song was in a way a response to Justin Timberlake's infamous single Cry Me a River: However, in an interview for MTV, Britney denied these rumors, which existed even before the song came out, saying "You know, it's funny," she said. "I read that I wrote this song and I wrote these lyrics, and that's not my style. I would never do that." "Sometimes when I get kind of bored, I come behind here and play the piano. There's a piano in the hotel room, so I was really excited. I don't know what 'C' is or, like, all that, but I do my own thing." In an interview for Hip Online, when describing her involvement in the lyrical content of the album, Britney talked about Everytime and Guy Sigsworth as a producer: Britney performed the song several times on television shows, as well as various of her tours. The very first time, was at Saturday Night Live on October 18, 2003. She's performed it at her Onyx Hotel Tour, the Circus Starring Britney Spears and Britney: Piece of Me. Several remixes were released for the song, including the Hi-Bias Remix, the Valentin Remix, the Above & Beyond's Mix, among others. In 2018, Britney Spears received the Gold and Platinum songwriting credits award for Work *****, Everytime and Make Me... Last month, we celebrated the anniversary of the David LaChapelle-directed music video for the song, which was released on April 12:
  2. On April 12, 2004, the Everytime music video premiered on TRL. It was the third video to promote In the Zone, Britney's fourth studio album. It was filmed on March 13 and 14 in Los Angeles and it was directed by David LaChapelle, who had photographed her in 1999 for the Rolling Stone magazine. The video features Britney and her love interest (Stephen Dorff) arriving at a hotel in Las Vegas inside a limousine. They seem distant, and when Britney tries to touch him while he talks on the phone, he pushes her away . They're received by a crowd of paparazzi and fans, making them struggle to walk by, but they eventually make their way, entering from the backdoor of the hotel, after Britney's boyfriend had thrown some magazines to the paps. They keep arguing as they reach their room, where Britney gets in the bathtub while her boyfriend stays in the couch. As she touches her head while lying in the bathtub, she notices that there's blood from a wound she got at the beginning of the video, when a paparazzo accidentally hit her with a camera. She then loses consciousness and drowns. From here we see intercut scenes of Britney running in a hospital hallway and her boyfriend rescuing her from the bathtub. We see her being carried into an ambulance surrounded by the paparazzi, and the doctors trying to resuscitate her at the hospital. Her ghost or spirit is seeing herself in the bed, and when she walks to the next room, she sees a baby being born. At the end we see her rising from under the water in the bathtub and smiling, suggesting it was all a dream or fantasy. Before the video was shot, MTV news obtained a treatment of the video, which involved a cup of wine and a bottle of pills in the bathtub scene. She was supposed to die and be seen in the end walking past the paparazzi, who wouldn't notice her ghost. However, it received a lot of criticism from the public who accused Britney of "glorifying suicide". Britney, through her record label, decided against this treatment, clarifying it was not meant to be a suicide, but an accidental death, and that the treatment would be revised. The day of the premiere, Britney called the show and explained the concept of reincarnation of the video. She added "It's more like a movie. It's different than anything I've ever done. It's dark, and it shows me in a different light. Of course, I'm going to go back and do dance videos, but I wanted to be inspired and challenged." The video went #1 a few times on TRL countdown, and in MTV Latin America, it landed at #37 in the yearly Top 100 of 2004. In 2018, it became Britney's 15th video to surpass 100M views on YouTube. In May, she appeared on UK's TRL, where she clarified again the video wasn't about suicide, but that even if it were, it should be taken in a positive light by the parents, in order to raise awareness since the suicide rates were at their highest. She also talked about David LaChapelle, and played Rock, paper, scissors against her past self. On her Greatest Hits: My Prerogative, an alternative cut of the video was released, including some outtakes:
  3. On March 02, 2004 The Onyx Hotel Tour kicked off in San Diego, in order to support Britney Spears' fourth album In the Zone. Britney visited America and Europe with it and and showed a more mature and adult side of her in comparison to her previous tours. With 54 concerts in total, 616,887 in attendance, a box office of U$35.3M, The Onyx Hotel Tour would be her last stadium concert before marrying Kevin and becoming a mom the following year, and eventually put under a conservatorship against her will in 2008. Originally planned as "The In the Zone Tour" (later changed due to a lawsuit filed for trademark infringement) it was announced in December 2003. The tour extended through June 06, when it was abruptly cancelled after she injured her knee on the set of the Outrageous music video, after suffering another injury onstage in March while performing (I Got That) Boom Boom in Illinois. It was intended to end in August, and in total 40 shows were cancelled. The setlist was comprised mostly of tracks from the album In the Zone, with only some of her classic hits making the cut, two of which, ...Baby One More Time and Oops!... I Did It Again, were reworked in a Cabaret style. The majority of the show is focused on dancing and sensual performances, but two moments stand out during the concert, the ballads Everytime, performed with Britney playing the piano, and Shadow. Divided in seven segments that narrate the story within the Onyx Hotel, these were the songs performed on the tour: Toxic Overprotected Boys Showdown ...Baby One More Time Oops!... I Did It Again (You Drive Me) Crazy Everytime The Hook Up I'm a Slave 4 U Shadow Touch of My Hand Breathe on Me Outrageous (I Got That) Boom Boom Me Against the Music In an interview for the Associated Press, she explained the meaning behind the onyx stone and the hotels in her life, as well as what the public could expect from the show: MTV was a big supporter of the tour, doing several special shows to promote it. Thanks to Britney Online @CJMCH we just got this backstage at Fresno from TRL in high quality There was also the longer MTV special Road to Miami Besides the show from Miami in March, the one at Rock in Rio Lisboa was also broadcasted in June, and it was reported by MTV that a reality show was being produced to document the backstage of the European leg, which would be later reworked into what ended up being Britney & Kevin: Chaotic.
  4. On January 26, 2004, the premiere of Pepsi's Gladiator commercial took place in London. The ad was filmed at the Coliseum in Rome and featured Britney Spears, Beyoncé and Pink as gladiators who perform a new version of Queen's classic We Will Rock You. Enrique Iglesias played the role of the evil emperor, and Brian May and Roger Taylor from Queen also made cameo appearances. Brian May said about the commercial: "I will die happy, I think in the end, it will be a good piece of art. There is more money and more talent per second in an ad than in anything else. It was incredible to work with the three of them, and hear the song come to life in a new way. Freddie would definitely have enjoyed it". Britney said about this collaboration: "It's amazing to work with artists like Pink and Beyoncé. It's really, really cool. You want to pinch yourself. This was a thrill beyond belief." Several promo singles were released featuring the track from the commercial, plus some songs by the three divas and Enrique. The general one featured: We Will Rock You (Pepsi "Gladiators" Sound Track Remix) - Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Pink Trouble - Pink Me, Myself & I (Remix) (Grizz's Main Mix) - Beyoncé Me Against the Music (Remix) (Dragon Man Mix) - Britney Spears Addicted (Remix) - Enrique Iglesias Sky Away - Solange Everything You Want -JC Behind the Scenes And then there were the Britney Exclusive, Beyoncé Exclusive and Pink Exclusive promo CD's

  14. Falling down the rabbit hole of YouTube during quarantine I stumbled upon the first episode of Chaotic- I remember back when it was first on the air It was universally panned and Britney was dragged for even taking part in it. She’s even been quoted as it being the one thing in her career she regretted. I can’t help but disagree seeing how real and care free she was back then. Saying and doing EXACTLY what she wanted and being extremely open and honest on camera. I’d love to see her do something like this again once the C-ship is over. Anyone else have thoughts??
