  1. On September 6, 2001, the MTV Video Music Awards aired live from the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. Fatboy Slim was the biggest winner of the night with six moonmen, for the video Weapon of Choice, followed by NSYNC with 4 and the collaboration between Christina Aguilera, Lil Kim, Mýa and Pink for Lady Marmalade with 2, including Video of the Year. It also featured memorials for Aaliyah and Joey Ramone. The show counted with performances by Jennifer Lopez, Linkin Park, Alicia Keys and NSYNC featuring MIchael Jackson among others, but the biggest event was Britney Spears' performance of I'm a Slave 4 U, the lead single off her third studio album Britney set to be released later that year. The performance had a jungle theme and she started it by standing inside a cage with a live tiger. Besides a heavy choreography that featured what would later become her signature dance breakdown, the performance included towards the end another live animal, an albino python (named Banana). The performance became an instant classic, and to this day is remembered as one of the best performances of the VMA's. That year, Britney was nominated for Best Pop Video (Stronger) but lost to NSYNC's Pop.
  2. On March 02, 2001, Britney Spears' Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know music video premiered on TRL. The last music video off the Oops!... I Did It Again album was directed by Herb Ritts, who passed away the following year, on December 2002. The video was shot in two days in Miami, Florida during the last week of January. Britney, who had already been photographed by Ritts in 1999, picked him as the director inspired by his work with Madonna (Cherish, 1989) and Janet Jackson (Love Will Never Do (Without You), 1989). Herb Ritts' signature was to film his videos in black and white, but that was not the case for DLMBTLTK. In an interview for Rolling Stone, he talked about the video: The video debuted at #1 on TRL and topped this list a number of times throughout its run. Despite Britney saying it "was the funnest video I've ever done," it was reported that both her mom Lynne and then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake weren't as excited about the clip, which shows Britney wearing just a bikini top and denim shorts, cuddling and kissing a shirtless man at the beach. The video in fact was revised and the most "raunchy" scenes were cut out of the official version. However, the cut content and some bloopers were released later on 2004's Greatest Hits: My Prerogative DVD. In 2002, the French model Brice Durand, who plays Britney's interest in the video, gave an interview for journalist Sean Bickerton where he talked about his experience filming the video, from being picked after a messy casting audition to working with Britney Spears and Herb Ritts. He narrated the day he did the audition: "It was a Thursday horrible - it was raining very hard, I had had a long day, five or six appointments, and a friend was taking me to all of them on his motorcycle, so I was getting all wet. My jeans were soaked, my hair was a mess, I was totally deplorable. So I was just calling my agent to tell them that I had completed the days when they told me to go to an audition for a clip of Britney Spears. At this point I was so messy, I was dirty and wanted nothing more than to go home and dry up, but I thought "Who cares, I'm at it," without expecting anything." He said they had auditioned more than six hundred guys: 200 from L.A., 200 from N.Y. and 200 from Miami. When he arrived, everyone had already gone, and there were just a pile of cards everywhere and he thought he had no chance. The next Sunday he got a call telling him that he was accepted for the video, and was informed that he would be the only model appearing with Britney on the shoot. In the interview he explains sometimes it's hard to work with female models for photoshoots and such, where they can get mad if you put your hand where you shouldn't or they think he's being flirty when he's just trying to be as realistic as possible while keeping it professional. He thus thought Britney would be no exception, and was expecting a diva behavior from her. He said that even though they improvised a little on the scenes, Herb Ritts was always giving them direction making sure everything went well, and also praised Britney for always nailing her scenes in one take. 4. On January 28, 2001, the Super Bowl XXXV halftime show took place at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. The show, dubbed as "The Kings of Rock and Pop" was produced by MTV and it was headlined by Aerosmith and NSYNC, with guest appearances by Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige, Nelly, Tremors and The Earthquake Horns. It was the first time in a Super Bowl halftime show that fans stood in the field around the stage. The show started with a sketch with Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Aerosmith and NSYNC, followed by this setlist: Bye Bye Bye (NSYNC) I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing (Aerosmith) It's Gonna Be Me (NSYNC and Tremors featuring The Earthquake Horns) Jaded (Aerosmith) Walk This Way ((Aerosmith, NSYNC, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige, Nelly)
  5. On January 17, 2001, Britney Spears released Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know as the fourth and final single off her second album Oops!... I Did It Again. The song was produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lunge, who co-wrote the song with his then wife, country singer Shania Twain and Keith Scott. The teen ballad talks about a woman who's waiting for her love interest to tell her that he loves her too; despite her friends telling her he's into her, she wants to hear it from him, she doesn't want to be the last to know Despite the song receiving mostly positive reviews, it failed to make its way into any US charts, mainly because it wasn't properly released as a single, but it was sent only to radio stations. However, it did reach Top 10 and Top 20 in many other countries, mainly in Europe, including a #1 in Romania. A music video was directed by Herb Ritts, but it wasn't released until March 2001. Several remixes were created, the most notable being the Hex Hector Club Mix, which would later appear on B in the Mix: the Remixes. The song was first performed on her Crazy 2k Tour in 2000, ahead of the release of the album. Then it was included on her Oops!... I Did It Again Tour She also performed the song in many tv shows and the Dream Within a Dream Tour almost 10 years later, she would bring it back for her Femme Fatale Tour in 2011 Britney Spears has stated in multiple occasions that Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know is one of her favorite songs. For example, in 2013 she named it her favorite song of hers:
  6. On January 08, 2001, the 28th American Music Awards took place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. They were hosted by Britney Spears and LL Cool J. Britney herself was one of the performers of the night, along with Jennifer Lopez, Toni Braxton, Pink, Jessica Simpson, Ricky Martin, Marilyn Manson, among others. Faith Hill was the biggest winner of the night with 3 awards. Britney Spears got several nominations, but didn't take any of the awards: Artist of the Year - lost to *NSync Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist - lost to Faith Hill Favorite Pop/Rock Album (Oops!... I Did It Again) - lost to Creed's Human Clay Here you can watch the performance, courtesy of Britney Online @CJMCH And the full show This is also the night of the iconic denim dress. In 2013, during a Britney Jean / Vegas promo interview for MTV, she revealed the denim outfits were her idea and that she still has the dress. In August 2020, she posted about it on her Instagram account
  7. Disclaimer: This might be one of the most confusing release dates to track. Unlike Born to Make You Happy which had a very concise release, Overprotected, an international single, seemed to have had very different release dates across the world, both the single and the music video. If you go to the English Wikipedia page, the earliest release they show is December 12 in Japan. If you go to the Spanish Wikipedia, which has the "good article badge", it shows December 18. Yet it seems in Australia they got it even earlier, on December 08. The official Britney Spears website doesn't mention it and other sources I've quoted before, such as this list made by britney.com blogger BRITannica, either. Then when it comes to the video, it's missing concrete sources as well. I'm creating this thread today, because the earliest confirmation I could find was this entry (9th post from the bottom to the top) on worldofbritney.com that reveals the music video was premiered in Latin America on December 20, 2001. Yet on ukmix, there's a comment that says they've already seen the video by December 15, and even worldofbritney has the screencaps of it. This other thread may confirm they had it in "Holland" around those days. So if you know a concrete date for the release of the single or the video, please share What we know for sure is that on December 2001, Britney Spears released Overprotected as the second single off her third studio album Britney. In Europe it was released on January 2002. This single was released internationally, while on the United States they got I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman (whose release date is also another story ). For the third single they would switch, thus the US getting Overprotected (Darkchild Remix) and the rest of the world getting Not a Girl. These entries were supposed to be created by our very own @Roxxy so here I'll quote her comments on the calendar page: Written and produced by Max Martin and Rami, Overprotected stands as one of only five Britney songs to be nominated for a Grammy. In 2003, it was up for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance - her third and final nomination in the category. Overprotected was a Top 10 hit in 13 countries including #4 in the UK and #1 in Poland, ultimately peaking at #8 on the European Hot 100. The Darkchild Remix peaked at #86 on the US Hot 100 and #22 on the Canadian Hot 100. Overprotected is a global Top 10 peaking at #6 on the United World Chart dated March 9, 2002. It spent 14 weeks in the chart. The music video was directed by Billie Woodruff (who directed Born to Make You Happy two years before) and choreographed by @BrianFriedman More roxxy comments: The Billie Woodruff video features an intro using another track from the album, Bombastic Love. TRIVIA TIME! The Overprotected music video stands tall as the only one in her videography to feature two songs from her catalog. Not only that, the music video also takes pride in the fact that it is the only one to have it's own follow-up via the release of the Darkchild Remix music video. It's so good that they had to release two official versions, each with their own music video. I mean, how cool is that? Your faves could never, honestly. Don't even try to come for Godprotected. The opening scene, which plays Bombastic Love in the background, shows Britney opening a door and right outside is a swarm of paparazzi waiting for her as she makes her way to her car and drives off. She stops by an abandoned warehouse where she reflects on being 'overprotected' - and in true Britney fashion, she feels herself on some of the furniture. She is also shown sitting on a horse from a carousel because she needs 'joy'. Soon after, her dancers arrive and they do one of her best dance breaks eveeer. After she goes ACTION! is where the song takes you to a high as it goes into a crescendo towards the final chorus and features this iconic scene where Britney literally needs her 'space' with the walls closing in on her with the phrases 'Britney Mania!' 'Girl of the Year' 'Album Goes Double Platinum' 'There Is No Stopping Her!' 'WORLD TOUR SELLS OUT!' Never has a Britney Spears music video been so self aware and so proud of herself, her sales, and her achievements - and this is coming from one of the most humble pop girls in history. Which is why the original Overprotected music video should be a celebrated gem in her videography. This is one of the rare moments where Britney acknowledges that she is indeed 100% that girl. Btw, I always mention her appearances on the MTV Latin America yearly Top 100, but this video was her very first huge snub. It didn't make the list in 2001 because it was released almost at the end of the year, but it totally deserved to appear in 2002, when it really became a hit. However, the video didn't appear at any position at all, infuriating all the fans who voted it throughout the year on the weekly Top 10 and Top 20.
  8. On December 04, 2001, the Billboard Music Awards took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Destiny's Child were the biggest winners of the night. Britney Spears performed I'm a Slave 4 U, the lead single off her third studio album Britney, on a platform placed in front of the Fountains of Bellagio.
  9. On November 20, 2001, the Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius movie soundtrack was released, ahead of the release of the movie on December 21st that year. The soundtrack of the Nickelodeon produced film was released through Zomba Records, Jive Records and Nick Records, and featured three tracks by Aaron Carter, as well as other collaborators such as NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Nick Cannon, among others. Britney Spears' Intimidated was included as track #4. The song, which was produced by Darkchild, had been previously released as the B-side to her single I'm a Slave 4 U. Tracklist: Leave It Up to Me - Aaron Carter Pop (Deep Dish Cha - Ching Remix) - NSYNC Parents Just Don't Understand (Teddy Riley Remix) - Lil' Romeo, Nick Cannon and 3LW Intimidated - Britney Spears He Blinded Me With Science - Melissa Lefton A.C.'s Alien Nation - Aaron Carter Kids in America - No Secrets The Answer to Our Life - Backstreet Boys The Chicken Dance - Werner Thomas I Can Count on You - True Vibe We Got the Beat - Go Go's Go Jimmy Jimmy - Aaron Carter Parents Just Don't Understand (Bonus Mix) - Lil' Romeo, Nick Cannon and 3LW Blitzkrieg Bop - The Ramones Jimmy Neutron Theme - Bowling for Soup
  10. On November 03, 2001, MTV aired a special variation of their TRL show called Total Britney Live to promote the upcoming release of Britney's self-titled album.
  11. On November 1, 2001, Britney Spears' Dream Within a Dream Tour kicked off at the Nationwide Arena in Ohio. It was launched to support her third studio album Britney and it lasted until July 2002, after 69 shows across the United States, Canada, Japan and Mexico. It was promoted by Concerts West, marking the first time a tour of hers was not promoted by Clear Channel Entertainment. It was directed and choreographed by Wade Robson, with Steve Cohen and Rob Brenner designing the stage. The setlist was composed by songs from her first three records, mainly from Britney. Oops!... I Did It Again (You Drive Me) Crazy Overprotected Born to Make You Happy Lucky Sometimes Boys Stronger I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman I Love Rock 'n' Roll What It's Like to Be Me Lonely Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know Anticipating I'm a Slave 4 U ...Baby One More Time Some unreleased songs were also performed at selected dates: Mystic Man, Weakness, You Were My Home and My Love Was Always There. Some of the October dates had to be pushed back to December due to Britney having the flu, and the last show of the tour at Foro Sol in Mexico, had to be cancelled mid-show because of a thunderstorm that was occurring. The November 18th show at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, was broadcasted by HBO and later released as a DVD titled Britney: Live from Las Vegas in January 2002. A book and DVD chronicling her stay in Mexico was also released in December 2002, titled Stages: Three Days in Mexico. With more than 1 million in attendance, the tour grossed a total of $56.8 million which would be equivalent to $83.4 million in 2020. Related:
  12. On October 25, 2001, the comedy film Longshot was released in theaters in Germany. Written by Louis Perlman and directed by Lionel C. Martin, the movie starred Tony DeCamillis, Paul Sorvino, Antonio Sabato Jr., Hunter Tylo and Ellen Albertini Dow, with multiple guest star cameos by NSYNC, Britney Spears, O-Town, C-Note, Take 5, Innosense, among many others. Thanks to Britney Online for the clip @CJMCH The movie, which was a commercial failure, did not receive a theater release in the US, instead it was shown on Disney Channel and later released on DVD on March 26, 2002. It was even packaged along with Crossroads in selected FYE stores.
  13. Aaliyah’s self titled album is available to stream today for the first time EVER since it’s original release 20 years years ago!! Much of the recording for this album was spread out between 1998-2001, and would serve as Aaliyah’s final album. It was heavily written and produced by Static Major. timbaland would join on for the final tracks. A song produced by Missy Elliot, I Care 4 U, is also on the record and was originally recorded in 1996. Here are my favourite songs: About a month and a half after the original release in 2001, Aaliyah died on August 25th in a tragic plane crash. billboards around NYC, LA, and Detroit, and Tokyo have appeared promoting the album! I recently created an hour long documentary which took me about a year to make. It details the reasons for why you couldn’t stream aaliyahs music, and the impact this has had on her legacy for future generations of music listeners. It includes back to back interviews (with a cameo from various stars at the time including Britney), along with a backdrop detailing the political landscape/world and how music consumption has also changed. I’d really appreciate if you could check it out ✨🤍 @PokemonSpears @Midnight @Jordan Miller @SlayOut @SUCCESSICA IS A QUEEN @boyinthemirror
  14. On September 8, 2001, Kylie Minogue released Can't Get You Out of My Head, the lead single off her eighth studio album Fever, released a month later. The song was written and produced by Cathy Dennis and Rob Davis. The song went #1 in 40 countries, but it peaked at #7 in the US Billboard Hot 100, and it's sold over 5 million copies around the world as of 2018. The track had been originally offered to S Club 7 and Sophie Ellis-Bextor, who passed on it, until Kylie's A&R heard it and booked it for her. An iconic music video was directed by Dawn Shadforth and choreographed by Michael Rooney, winning Best Choreography at the VMA's in 2002.
  15. On August 27, 2001, Shakira released Whenever, Wherever as the lead single off her fifth studio album Laundry Service. The Spanish version, Suerte (literally translated as Luck), was also released across different regions. The Latin-pop / worldbeat song had influences of Andean music, with prominent traditional instruments such as the charango and the Quena flute. It was written and produced by Shakira and Tim Mitchell, with additional writing by Gloria Estefan. It became her breakthrough hit in the US, peaking at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100, her most successful single at the time (later surpassed by Hips Don't Lie in 2006) and it topped the chart in 29 other countries, including the majority of Latin America, Asia, Middle East and Oceania. The music video has over 590M views on her Youtube account. Lyrically, both the English and Spanish version talk about the lucky they are for the circumstances she and her love interest were born under, and how that led them to be together, with the use of several examples and analogies (that perhaps make more sense in Spanish than in English). However, they differ in the chorus in that the Whenever, Wherever states they're meant to be together, whereas in Suerte she's the one making the decision to be with him, though it's a small change. Both versions of the music video were directed by Francis Lawrence, filmed in front of a green screen that shows her in various natural environments across the globe, like the mountains, the desert and the ocean. Lawrence also directed Britney Spears' I'm a Slave 4 U, using a green screen as well, which was actually filmed around the same time, with Britney stating in an interview that she met Shakira at the set of her video. The clip became Shakira's first retired video on TRL, and won the Latin Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video. It also appeared on MTVLA's yearly Top 100, both in 2001 and 2002 at #60, and at #4 in the Top 100 of the whole 00's decade. Whenever, Wherever as the beginning of the Laundry Service era, also marked a change in Shakira's look to a full blonde hair, to which she would stick for the following decade and beyond, leaving behind her natural black hair from the 90's, and the red hair she had rocked during her MTV Unplugged era. In Latin America this difference is often referred to as "the old Shakira" and "the new Shakira", though for most non Latin American countries it's the only look of hers they've always known. Shakira has performed the song in various tours and shows, though the only time she performed the original version was at the Radio Music Awards. The rest of the occasions, she's used several different arrangements and remixes.
  16. On June 16, 2001, Britney Spears appeared at the Wango Tango festival as a guest host
  17. Hey guys! I’m kind of getting big on collecting items (not even Britney related but, art and music from the 2000s) https://ibb.co/PMWrKmT im actually getting a shirt worn by a crew member at the 2001 VMAs because I think it’s really cool, and have recently got some VHS. I was wondering if you guys would be willing to help me locate something very specific. In November 2001, just 2 months after 9/11, Britney’s HBO special premiered. several ads promoting the HBO special were plastered on billboards in subway stations across the city. They were defaced. People were very angry during this time about the emphasis on pop culture as opposed to the existing political climate. Just under a month before the graffiti and defaced posters were spotted around subways in New York, President George W. Bush announced the US invasion in Afghanistan. This decision has invoked countless of deaths (military and everyone on the ground) and global criticism. The war on terror continues today. https://youtu.be/osXkym5GHXI Some defaced posters read ‘it’s Over’, ‘can we afford this anymore’, ‘America’s *****’, and ‘Britney Spears is everyrhinf wrong with America’. Some posters call Britney ‘self righteous’, and have scribbles of the Taliban. It’s strange that society attributed grievance and blame to Britney for the actions of governments and terrorist organizations? it was easy to back then I guess, but isn’t excusable. I wonder if anyone looks back at this now and thinks, holy **** that was cruel and quite s**ist. Either way, I believe this is a piece of modern art that America should be ashamed of, but also not hide. It’s actually quite an interesting piece and telling of where North America was just under 2 decades ago. Anyway, I know that @Jordan Miller said we might be opening a merch store soon so I was wondering if anyone knew where I could locate this historical artifact? Were these destroyed shortly after? Anyone know how much these could sell for? original source: https://mrbellersneighborhood.com/2001/11/defacing-britney Defacing Britney By WILL BECTON AND STEPHEN HOBAN • 11/21/2001Neighborhood: ALL OVER, MULTIPLE
  18. On May 02, 2000, Britney Spears had a special showcase in Tokyo, Japan for the release of her second studio album Oops!... I Did It Again, which was released in that country on May 03, before anywhere else in the world. On May 01, she had a press conference and a photocall session, you can see a bit of it here: On May 02, she had a M&G and signed autographs for her fans. She also gave an interview for MTV and Big Hit magazine: And she also had a special showcase as well as an interview where she talked about the new album and her newly released Oops!... I Did It Again video. As a bonus, on May 02, but in 2001, she won the Best Selling Female Pop Artist category at the 2001 World Music Awards:
  19. On April 10, 2001, Britney Spears and her mom Lynne released the novel A Mother's Gift. Following 2000's Heart to Heart, the novel narrates the story of a teenage girl named Holly who receives a scholarship to study at the Haverty School of Performing Arts. A portion of the proceeds of the book went to The Britney Spears Foundation. In 2004, the novel received a movie adaptation on ABC Family, titled Brave New Girl (named after the 2003 In the Zone's track), and though the plot was considerably different, Britney was credited as executive producer.
  20. Billboard released a new article discussing the success of the Britney album and the impact of Slave 4 U on Britney's career and pop culture. The article is part of Billboard's press releases to recap music from 20 years ago. I think this quote best describes the video: "Spears stares piercingly into the camera throughout much of the video, giving a look that would strike fear into the Parents Television Council -- and excitement into young boys and girls around the world." The article also reflects on the #FreeBritney movement, linking the Britney album to Britney's personal struggles: "Given what we know today about the pressure she faced, and what little jurisdiction she appears to have over her life and career, the power she wields in the singles, videos, and performances during her self-titled era hit even harder now than ever before." Very interesting read! Check it out here. On a second note, I really think that the Britney album should be re-evaluated by critics. They penned it at the time, but as of 2020, the album surely stands out as a pop masterpiece, with some of Britney's best released and unreleased tracks (justice for Cinderella). It still bothers me that the singles were not as missive on the charts in USA as they were outside, where nearly all singles were top 3 or top 5 in charts like France, UK, and Australia.. What do you guys think?
  21. On March 13, 2001, the first ever MTV Icon special took place at Sony Picture Studios in Culver City honoring Janet Jackson's career. MTV Icon was a series of annual special concerts that took place from 2001 to 2004. Several artists participated in the ceremony performing Janet's his: Outkast, Destiny's Child, Macy Gray, NSYNC, Pink, Usher, Mýa, Buckcherry and Janet Jackson herself closed the show performing her hit All for You. Presenters included Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Lopez, Aaliyah, Christina Aguilera, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, and record producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
  22. A day like today but in 2001, Colombian superstar Shakira released her first bilingual record. This happened 19 years ago, which feels like forever ago, and at the same time, just like yesterday. I feel great writing about this, since this album is one that marked my life. While it was mainly recorded in English, it was the singles in Spanish what made this album so great in my opinion. 'Whenever Wherever' is great, but 'Suerte' is sublime. 'Objection' needs to be played loud, but 'Te Aviso Te Anuncio' needs to be played thunderously. 'Te Dejo Madrid' is a rock and roll anthem and she looks gorgeous in the music video. 'Que Me Quedes Tú', is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. Also, we had the chance to get a version in English of her iconic song 'Ojos Así' ('Eyes Like Yours'), which actually belonged to her former release 'Dónde Están Los Ladrones'- another masterpiece, by the way. 'Underneath Your Clothes', her first single in English (that didn't have a Spanish counterpart), has s.e.xy written all over it. A honeymoon anthem, I'd say. Now let us run down the deep cuts: Songs like 'Rules', 'The One', and 'Fool', depicted Shakira's artistry just as we, Spanish speakers grasped it since her beginning: rock-tinged, smart lyricism, and her signature vocals. 'Ready For the Good Times' is a certified bop. It deserved single treatment. Lyrically, it is probably her most "main pop girl" song, if someone knows what I mean. 'Poem to a Horse' closed the era. It is edgy, clever, unapologetic, and it needed a proper music video. Finally, these songs were the inception of that joke that we just don't get Shaki's enunciation, be it Spanish or English, lol. This was a game changer for Shakira, what laid the basis for her future success in the English-speaking world, and today, we celebrate it. Exhale, how do you feel about this body of work?
