  4. The week of July 12 - July 16 in 1999, Britney Spears was a guest on MTV's TRL Week from Bahamas, where she chatted with Dave Holmes each of the five days from the paradisiacal destination. The show was part of the special that MTV had for the Summer, which included shows that featured several celebrities as guests, as well as a series of concerts at the beach, such as Limp Bizkit.
  5. On May 06, 1999, Britney Spears released the music video for Sometimes, the second single off her debut album ...Baby One More Time, debuting on TRL. It was directed by Nigel ****, who had previously directed her first video ever in 1998 and it was shot at Paradise Cove in Malibu, California. The video was supposed to be done earlier in the year: back in February, while she was rehearsing for it, she injured her knee, forcing the production of the video to be delayed, and she also had to reschedule several tv promo performances that were already planned in the following days. At first, she was supposed to only receive physical therapy to recover, but she ultimately went under a minor surgery. She said in a statement: "I want to thank my wonderful fans and all of the people who have offered their love and support during this time." The concept of the video was changed from the originally reported by MTV: "The new clip will feature Spears on the porch of a beachfront home watching a group of kids having fun, prompting flashbacks about her former boyfriend." Instead, Britney starts the video by looking through a telescope that's pointing to the beach, where she gets to see her love interest (Chad Cole) playing with his dog. Throughout the video we see Britney and her dancers on the Paradise Cove pier, wearing white outfits and performing the choreography done by Darren Henson; in addition, there's intercut scenes of her sitting near a car, in a balcony playing with a beach ball, in a lawn having a picnic, and some close-up shots under the pier and in front of a white wall, among others. Towards the end of the video, Britney leaves behind her shyness and stops running and hiding to succumb to the arms of her loved one, and we see them together by the pier In general, critics considered that this video portrayed Britney in a more pure, virginal image, as if trying to clean up her "****" persona from the BOMT music video. Sometimes landed at #15 on TRL's Top 99 of 99, a countdown done at the end of the year. The music video reached 100M views on YouTube in February 2018, surpassing the 200M views by 2021. On her video/DVD Time Out with Britney Spears, we see an interview of Britney describing the experience of recording the video, along with behind the scenes footage and more interviews on set. In 2012, some more behind the scenes footage leaked, showing a longer cut of the choreography Related:
  6. On May 1st, 1999, Britney Spears performed at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. A year later, on May 1st, 2000, she was performing on Japanese TV show POP Jam.
  7. On January 12, 1999, Britney Spears released her debut album …Baby One More Time. Recorded from 1997 to 1998, the album which is credited as the revival of post-millennium teen pop, counted with the production of Max Martin, Eric Foster White, Per Magnusson, Jörgen Elofsson, David Kreuger, Kristian Lundin and Rami Yacoub. These producers were also the songwriters of most of the tracks, with additional collaborators such as Andreas Carlsson and Mikey Bassie, the latter of which co-wrote Soda Pop where he also made some vocal appearances, though he wasn’t credited as a featured artist. That wasn’t the case for Don Philip, who does appear credited in the only true duet of the album, I Will Still Love You. The All Seeing I were commissioned to produce a cover of Sonny & Cher’s 1967 song The Beat Goes On, wrote by Sonny Bono. Another cover was I’ll Never Stop Loving You, originally released by J’Son in 1996, and it was included in some of the international versions, as well as a B-side of (You Drive Me) Crazy single. The only song co-wrote by Britney herself was I’m So Curious, the B-side of Sometimes single, which only appeared in a bonus disc of the Korean edition of the album. After Jive Records signed her in 1997, she was appointed to work with Eric Foster White with whom she recorded 13 songs, including the unreleased tracks Luv the Hurt Away, Let Me Take You There, Nothing Less Than Real and Wishing on a Falling Star. Another song that came from those session was You Got It All, a cover from The Jets which would be included on her second studio album, Oops!... I Did It Again (2000). After recording this material, Jive ordered a full album, and in 1998 she was sent to Sweden to work with Max Martin, Rami Yacoub and Denniz Pop (who would pass away a few months later). Max Martin would show Britney and her team a song that was originally intended for TLC but they rejected, “Hit Me Baby One More Time”. Britney and the label thought they had found a smash hit there, though it was precisely the word “Hit” in the title that made some of the executives at Jive a bit concerned due to the violent connotation it could have given a misinterpretation of the phrase. The song was retitled as …Baby One More Time, and it became Britney’s debut single, and would also become the title of the album. According to Britney in an interview for Billboard: The album is mostly Teen Pop with a bit of Dance influences. It includes mid-tempos, ballads and some up-tempos too, and the lyrics focus mostly on teenage love, infatuation and heartbreaks. In an interview for Rolling Stone, Britney revealed the album wasn’t quite the genre she had envisioned: After the album was finished in June, she started to promote the album with her L’Oreal Hair Zone Mall Tour where she performed six of the tracks. She would also become the opening act of the second leg of NSYNC in Concert tour later in the year. It wasn’t until June 1999 that she embarked on her very own tour …Baby One More Time Tour, followed by the (You Drive Me) Crazy Tour (also known as Crazy 2k Tour) in 2000, which would also serve as a prelude to her second record and upcoming world tour. Five singles were released in total to promote the record: …Baby One More Time, Sometimes, (You Drive Me) Crazy, Born to Make You Happy and From the Bottom of My Broken Heart. …Baby One More Time is Britney’s best-selling album to date, and one of the best-selling albums of all time with more than 25 million copies sold worldwide. It debuted at #1 on the US Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 121,000 copies, though the fifth week would be the best selling one, with 229,000 copies sold. The same week the album topped the Billboard 200, the single …Baby One More Time also reached the #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Britney Spears became the first new female artist to have a #1 single on the BBH100 and #1 album on the BB200 charts at the same time, also the first new female artist to achieve this with her very first single and first album, and the first new artist in general to go to the number one spot the same week that the album debuted at number one. In its first two months of being released in the US, it had already sold 1.8 million copies. Before a year had passed, the album was certified diamond by the RIAA, making Britney the youngest artist to receive this award. She also became the best-selling female artist of 1999 and the second overall, only behind the Backstreet Boys’ Millennium. …Baby One More Time spent a total of 103 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart, and to this day it’s been certified 14x diamond for over 14 million copies sold in the United States. The album was Top 5 in almost every country it charted, with its lowest position being on the Finnish Albums chart at #11. The album won Female Album Artist of the Year at the Billboard Music Awards 1999, Choice Album at the Teenage Choice Awards and it entered the Guinness World Records in 2000 for Best Selling Album in the US by a Female Artist and in 2003 as the Best-Selling Album by a Teenage Solo Artist. In 2016 it was ranked 41st on the Billboard Top 200 Albums of All Time. On December 25, 2007, the album was released digitally in the United States and in 2017 it was released on vinyl for the first time through Urban Outfitters.

  10. On December 17, 1999, Britney Spears released From the Bottom of My Broken Heart, the last music video to promote her debut album ...Baby One More Time. Different than the previous four videos, FTBOMBH features no dance scenes, and instead is more story-line driven, featuring more acting scenes between Britney and her love interest, played by Christopher Snyder. The video premiered on TRL. Britney phoned in to the help Carson Daly premiere the video and to announce some tour dates, while also revealing to the audience that she just had her wisdom teeth removed. The video starts with Britney at her house packing up her belongings as she remembers the times she spent with her boyfriend, in different scenarios like a football field or climbing up onto a windmill. She says goodbye to her mom and sister and leaves. We eventually see Britney as she tells the news to her man that she's leaving, breaking his heart in a now iconic scene Throughout the video we also see clips of Britney sitting on a tire swing, another one with sunflowers in the background, she's also singing by a "Welcome to Cedar Springs Gardens" billboard and at the windmill too. She finally takes the bus to leave, when we see the man arriving to the bus stop, only to find out it was too late. In a behind the scenes interview, Britney talks about the possibility of acting in a movie in the future (she would do Crossroads a few years later). The music video was directed by Gregory Dark. In an interview for EW he said he was hired by Jive Records to help them re-image Britney from the "naughty schoolgirl" persona from the ...Baby One More Time video: Ironically, Gregory Dark, who also directed Mandy Moore's Walk Me Home and So Real videos, used to make adult films in the late 80's to mid 90's. His erotic thrillers such as Animal Instincts and Body of Influence won him accolades such as "the Steven Spielberg of the soft-core set" and "the Martin Scorsese of the erotic thriller". On that interview, Dark defended himself saying ''I don't deny that I did it, it's just that I also like people to know that I don't currently and haven't in a long time.'' Meanwhile, Britney's representatives stated "as far as I'm aware the director just does music videos. This is a video for young teenage girls and not **** at all." From the Bottom of My Broken Heart became Britney's fourth video to be retired from TRL, and it also appeared at #87 on TRL's Top 99 of 99, a special countdown they did at the end of the year. 12. On December 06, 1999, Britney Spears released Born to Make You Happy as the fourth single off her debut album ...Baby One More Time, for European countries. Written and produced by Kristian Lundin with co-writing support of Andreas Carlsson, the teen pop song speaks from the perspective of a girl who suffers about a past relationship, alone in her room, not understanding what went wrong with it and promising the guy she'd do anything to be with him again. In an interview for Rolling Stone, Britney Spears revealed the song originally had a more adult connotation: The song was not released in the US, but in Europe it was a hit, reaching the Top 5 in almost every country, topping the charts of UK, Denmark, Ireland, Scotland and even went #1 on the European Radio Top 50. The song was first performed live on her The Hair Zone Mall Tour, and was later included on the ...Baby One More Time Tour, Crazy 2k Tour, Oops!... I Did It Again Tour and was performed for the last time on her Dream Within a Dream Tour as part of a medley with Lucky and Sometimes. It was also performed live on several TV show appearances. A music video was released the same day as the single. Directed by Billie Woodruff (who would later direct Overprotected and Do Somethin' videos) and choreographed by Wade Robson, it shows Britney sleeping, then we see her in a futuristic room with platforms of different levels wearing a silver outfit. By the second part of the song, we see her performing the choreography with her dancers, wearing a black leather skirt, boots and a red top. These scenes keep intercalating throughout the video. We also see her again in her room, this time wearing all white, and by the bridge of the song, her love interest is revealed, who comes in and hugs her from behind, while she's wearing yet another outfit, this time an orange top and khaki pants. They engage in a pillow fight. By the end of the video, we see her sleeping again as she smiles.
