The Spectator: Christina Aguilera is the real winner of the 2003 VMAs

It is nearly twenty years since the most iconic moment in modern music history: when Madonna, aged forty-five, made out with two women nearly half her age on the MTV Video Music Awards stage. Britney Spears, who was twenty-one, and Christina Aguilera, twenty-two, were pounced on in front of millions of television viewers, along with an uncomfortable looking Justin Timberlake and Guy Ritchie. 

Two decades later and Madonna would likely be canceled for ***ual harassment, with Britney and Xtina offered therapy and a book deal to “speak their truth.” But in August 2003, Madonna pulling off a garter from Aguilera’s leg, frenching Spears and then giving Aguilera a smacker on the lips was a standard Saturday night watch. 

It has often been said that Xtina’s snog was less impactful than Britney and Madonna’s embrace — but in hindsight, Cockburn thinks that the “Genie in a Bottle” singer got the last laugh. 

Madonna, now sixty-four, has had so much plastic surgery that she looks worse than she did at forty-five, with a face like Leatherface’s Mask. She was also released from the ICU this weekend, after suffering a mystery bacterial infection.

Things haven’t fared much better for Britney Spears, after what Cockburn would characterize as a significant breakdown of her mental health over the last few years, as evidenced on her Instagram account, where Spears posts videos of herself standing, hands awkwardly in pockets, reciting swear words. Another has her pretending to be dead, handcuffed and covered in blood. Today Spears announced the release date of her new memoir, The Woman in Me, which will come out October 24th.

As for Xtina, the singer seems to be killing it: her Instagram shows her to be spending time with her children and leading a happy and fulfilled life further from the spotlight. She has two children, a son, Max, who she shares with Jordan Bratman, and a daughter Summer, with Matthew Rutler. Good for her, getting the “Dirrty” out of her system early on…

Interesting thread.

I don't think though that what happened to Madonna and Britney had anything to do with their kiss being overshadowed by Christina.

Bad decisions caused their downfall, not this performance.

 

However you are right that Christina has had the best life out of the 3.

She still looks great and her life is stable.

 

I just can't believe how different both Madonna and Britney look now compared to here and its not cause its been 20 years.

Also, Madonna would hardly be cancelled. These days that kiss wouldn’t have even made headline news. It’s pretty PG in comparison to today’s performers.

And lastly, I think Britney and Madonna are doing just fine. Come back to us when Christina has a sell out world tour or a $15 million book deal.

In 2003, this was definitely not a standard Saturday night watch. That was the point and how it garnered so much controversy

As if a sold out tour or a book deal were the key to happiness...

While the article was disrespectful to Britney and Madonna, they are right about one thing: Nowadays,  Xtina seems to be the happiest out of the 3.

So basically this article is trashing the struggles Britney has gone through - the forced mental and physical abuse and contrasts that with Christina who didn’t experience that and apparently that makes her a “winner”? Can the same be applied to people in real life, if someone has been through issues then we need to feel superior to them?

Except Christina did embark on a sold out international tour last year and in 2019. And no offense but come back to me when Britney can look this good in 2023 and win more than 1 Grammy Award
