On September 6, 2001, the MTV Video Music Awards aired live from the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. Fatboy Slim was the biggest winner of the night with six moonmen, for the video Weapon of Choice, followed by NSYNC with 4 and the collaboration between Christina Aguilera, Lil Kim, Mýa and Pink for Lady Marmalade with 2, including Video of the Year. It also featured memorials for Aaliyah and Joey Ramone.

The show counted with performances by Jennifer Lopez, Linkin Park, Alicia Keys and NSYNC featuring MIchael Jackson among others, but the biggest event was Britney Spears' performance of I'm a Slave 4 U, the lead single off her third studio album Britney set to be released later that year. The performance had a jungle theme and she started it by standing inside a cage with a live tiger.

Besides a heavy choreography that featured what would later become her signature dance breakdown, the performance included towards the end another live animal, an albino python (named Banana).

The performance became an instant classic, and to this day is remembered as one of the best performances of the VMA's.

That year, Britney was nominated for Best Pop Video (Stronger) but lost to NSYNC's Pop.
