    2003:

Jan. 2003 - Some time during this year, Bryan Spears begins overseeing Britney's finances. "It was 2003 that I took over, until 2009," he claims in an interview from July 23, 2020. "We didn't have anyone that was overseeing the actual financial business development, next step kind of thing for Brit. We had managers, we had business managers, we had agents. Everything. But no one was looking at what the left hand was doing and looking at what the right hand was doing. There was no top cop, basically, who was looking out for her best interests. So we, as a family, as we always do, vote and come up with a family decision. We all thought that it would be a good idea for me to oversee all of it...Making sure money is being put away, new business is being formed, brands are being formed, trying to make money while we sleep so we're not so focused on having to tour." Bryan continues, "Looking at a situation...if I feel like I don't have a really good handle on it, or if I feel like I don't have the expertise to conquer it, I go and hire or find the person or company that can. So, I went and hired Ernst & Young out of Nashville, brought them in and did an entire audit of every single detail of her business from publishing to branding to merchandising...we had a huge doll line. Tour merch, and all of that. And I had those guys give me a report that showed me, and we all broke it down. And then I went back, assessed it, and then I wound up having to make a lot of adjustments after that." Interviewer: "So how did you feel when you got that report?" Bryan: "I was not very well liked, you could put it that way, amongst the team." Interviewer: "Did you give a rat's ***? I mean, if they're stealing from your sister?" Bryan: "Looking back on it, I did what was right." Interviewer: "What did you do? Did you clean house?" Bryan: "Ya. Everyone but the manager."

Jan. 3, 2004 - Around 5:00 a.m., Britney marries childhood friend Jason Alexander in Las Vegas without a prenuptial agreement. They were reportedly in Las Vegas to celebrate New Year's Eve while staying in the "Real World" suite at the Palms. After learning about the nuptials, Spears’ manager, Larry Rudolph, visits Palms owner George J. Maloof, Jr. at his Las Vegas home. “He knocked on my door to tell me that Britney got married and wanted to know if I could help,” Maloof recalls. Later, Britney is spotted dining at N9NE, the Palms' steakhouse, on Saturday night with new husband Jason Alexander, Rudolph, Maloof, her brother Bryan, and friends.

Jan. 5, 2004 - Las Vegas billionaire George Maloof enlists criminal defence attorney David Chesnoff to annul Britny’s marriage to Jason Alexander. “There is no marriage now,” says Chesnoff. “Jason agreed to this completely. They’ve made a wise decision. I know they care about each other. They are friends.” In the annulment petition, Chesnoff argues that, “Plaintiff Spears lacked understanding of her actions to the extent that she was incapable of agreeing to the marriage.” Alexander claims he was “duped” into the divorce by Britney’s mother and her management. One month later, her team disconnects her phone so Jason can no longer reach her.

Feb. 13, 2007 - Felicia Culotta pens a letter to the editor of "That Other Blog," that reads: "I cherish ALL the incredible opportunities that came my way thru my job with Britney and am crushed/saddened/heart sick by the way her life is unfolding…….I want you to know Ruben that WE (as in her Family and nearest and dearest—ALL of whom are NOT on the payroll anymore!!) are doing EVERYTHING in our power to get help for Britney and all in our power to NOT pad the bottom or move the bottom, so when she does indeed hit rock bottom, she’ll stand up and walk away from this whole fiasco a new, confident, changed, career driven Britney like we all knew and loved. There’s just so much you can do to help a person—I don’t dare want to be an enabler, and I cannot love her enough for the both of us. I cannot convince her in ANY way to love herself. All I can do is be a friend, someone that loved her for MANY years unconditionally, and PRAY. That, I have decided is the most and best I can do for my friend. I cannot save her from herself, nor can I commit her to any type of treatment program against her wishes and will. I am throwing my hands up and realizing that I am helpless over another—ANYONE! It’s been a hard reality for me to face. I have lived my best example daily, and that is ALL I’m capable of. To see what’s transpiring now, makes me feel a failure, defeated. I LOVED and BELIEVED in what I was a part of for the past 10 years and was so incredibly proud of Britney and all she’d become. All that to say this Ruben–I’m so Southern, and the BEST way for me to tell you how I feel is to say—You can just kick an old Dog so many times before he gets off the porch. I, FELICIA, am OFF the porch!!”

Feb. 16, 2007 - Britney nearly misses her six-hour flight from Miami to Los Angeles. The walkway is re-extended so she can board the plane. It is a Friday, making it one of Kevin Federline's scheduled visitation days from noon to 4 pm at Britney's residence. CNN Headline News: Showbiz Tonight reports: “ANDERSON: Breaking Britney Spears news. Tonight, did she really check into rehab? Plus, the alarming letter written to Britney from someone very close to her. The stunning warning that`s in it. SHOWBIZ TONIGHT investigates…LEVIN: …There`s been concern for a while now about her -- and -- for at least several months. And it`s been growing and growing and growing (since she filed for divorce)… And I think that`s when everybody got alarmed and got involved. CARROLL: I`m wondering how this might effect her ongoing custody battle with Kevin Federline regarding their two kids, Sean (ph) Preston and Jaden (ph) . They`ve been trying to work out custody arrangements on a month-to-month basis. I`m wondering could Britney`s behavior give Federline more ammunition to get custody of the children? LEVIN: Absolutely. Ultimately, a judge will have to sign off on this custody order. If she has a substance abuse problem she`s unwilling to fix, you know, that could have a big impact on any kind of a custody contest…

HARVEY LEVIN, MANAGING EDITOR, TMZ.COM: Hey, Jason. CARROLL: Harvey, you guys broke that story that Britney Spears checked in, and checked out of rehab 24 hours later. People.com is now reporting she checked herself into Eric Clapton`s Crossroads Center in Antigua. What else can you tell us about this? LEVIN: Well, just to correct, "Extra!" broke the story that she was in rehab. We broke the story that she lasted less than 24 hours. What happened was family members, basically, staged an intervention and convinced her to go over there and do it. And she just didn`t want to have any part of it. And as of an hour ago, at least, she was in the air flying home to Los Angeles.”

Feb. 19, 2007 - “Right before Britney went into Promises, after she shaved her head, I got an anonymous call from a man while I was driving in Los Angeles,” writes Lynne Spears in her book Through The Storm. “There are drugs planted in Britney’s Malibu home,” he said, going on to tell me that it was a conspiracy between Kevin and Britney’s assistants to make my daughter look like a bad mother.” Lynne claims that, "Immediately, I called the security guards at the Malibu house and asked them to check the house for drugs. While I knew Kevin would never hurt my daughter like that, and I highly doubted her assistants would either, things were so fragile with Britney at the time that I wasn't taking any chances. She had just lost custody of the boys to Kevin, and she was at a very low ebb. It was midnight, but I turned around and drove to Britney's house and met her assistant, Allie. Along with the guards, we combed the house, and no drugs whatsoever were to be found. Nonetheless, Allie and I were scared to death. I didn't hear from this mysterious person again until months later...When I told him his theory had proved wrong, he protested: "There were drugs; you just didn't find them," he said, earnestly." Several paragraphs later, Lynne claims the man who called about the drugs was Sam Lutfi.

February 20, while at the apartment of her brother Bryan, and in the presence of celebrity interventionist Betty Wyman, Britney is unknowingly fed an unidentified medication by her mother, Lynne Spears. According to Sam Lutfi, and confirmed by Alli Sims: "Yes, Lynne was at her sons Bryans apt in Marina Del , I believe Betty Wineman, an interventionist was present, as well as Alli Sims and there was another women [sic] there at the time. According to Lynne, she sent the unnamed woman to the pharmacy at the Ralphs Grocery Store next door to pick up an RX that she had called in, when the woman brought the pills to the apt, Lynne claims she took a pill crushed it on the kitchen counter and wiped the contents into Britneys Red Bull, in which Britney drank, passed out and later was driven to promises."

Mar. 7, 2007 - Around this time, Britney's assistant Kalie Machado claims that she received a call “at a restricted number” from Sam Lutfi. He said, "he was a private eye for Kevin and that Kevin had screwed him, so he was willing to hand over all this confidential information on Britney." Lutfi insisted they meet, says Machado, who reluctantly agreed to see him at a Santa Monica Starbucks. "He started telling me all these things," she says. "He said there was a search warrant to search Spears' Malibu house for drugs, and 'I know there's a tap on your phone, and I know you're being followed.'" But for someone who claimed to know so much, says Machado, "he was asking weird questions, like 'what do you guys do during the day? Where do you go?' I was like, what a freak, so I just ended up leaving." Then, “I got more calls from Sam after that,” she remembers, “but I just ignored them.”
