The 1997 MTV movie awards and fan voted awards that had movie categories.  Scream won best movie with Neve Campbell winning best actress over oscar winners like Kate Winslet.  

 

Hell, Scream 2 won a blockbuster best movie award over titanic.  

 

So even then the fans liked something different than oscar bait films.
