EU tried to ban the word Christmas for being ''too offensive''

I want to see what @A.a.A and @The Greatest Show think about this

This is utter nonsense. There’s a quote out there that states something like this.

When we as a society start changing the meanings of words we find offensive or start adding new words (various pronouns and such), then it’s the beginning of the end of that society.

it’s not verbatim, but it’s along those lines. This is where we are, and I’m afraid it will be the end soon. This is basically “new speak” from 1984.

Lol this thread is such a reach and it really just proves how reactionist some people are.

The "War on Christmas" is a laughable concept, because its literally just a concept made by people who know their faith alone is so weak and flawed, they need to force it onto people. Imagine it, other people with different religions might celebrate other holidays, and not celebrate Christmas; a holiday that literally, factually, didn't actually happen in December but was rescheduled so that it lined up with Pagan Holidays. What a concept!

Anyways, Happy Holidays Guys.

Yeah, it's not like they're banning xmas on the entire continent, it's just a policy within the institution. It's not the first nor the last workplace to have a silly HR policy that doesn't make much sense. They're just trying to be inclusive. Granted, this is the wrong way to go about it, but it's not the sinister conspiracy people are making it out to be.

Oh please, y'all will call Gen Z snowflakes but then get outraged for the sake of being outraged over sh-t like this. This scrolling culture of only reading headlines is worse than whatever wokeness/snowflakery y'all are seeing here. :howiroll_beyonce_telling_talking_chatting_preaching_white_shirt_hands: There's definitely been cases of overpolicing when it comes to language in recent years, but this is not one of them. This is literally just outrage bait. :orangu_orangutan_ape:

They are brain dead. Imagine cancelling Xmas on a continent where first you have a Christian Xmas and then, Orthodox one. They aren't taking those away from me. Esp since there's a nice Slava in January.

Idgaf if Xmas is offensive to some gen Z tiktok kids and woke soccer moms, I AM CELEBRATING IT 2 TIMES (as I've always had)!

I wouldn't call it an 'orthodox xmas' because some orthodox xmas nations also celebrate xmas on 25th of december :riri_rihanna_take_bow_wink_flirt_hand_white:

Anyways I don't see this EU internal recommendation as 'trying to cancel xmas' whatsoever

I don’t get it. If everyone wished me a happy Hanukkah I would love it. Merry Christmas or any seasonal holiday greeting Is just another way of saying “happy tidings” or just a general well wish. Even if ppl don’t celebrate it, it’s still a nice sentiment. Who is offended????

EU is overall less into wokism than the US lol

in France it had more to do with secularism than including other religions. French are still overall conservative (80% of people intend to vote a center-right or right or extreme-right or ultra right party for the next elections) so it didn't really work, even though the majority of French are not religious.

still a lot of people don't give a ****

Let’s try it this way: what if instead of “Christmas” the subject was “gender”?
What if the request was “include all genders not only he/him she/her”? What would have been the excuse then?

Equally silly. Anyone with half a brain is over all this nonsense. These people should stay home. Forever. Merry Christmas.

I think this has been widely misinterpreted and taken out of context.

First of all this is a recommendation not a ban.

Secondly, it concerns the term Christmas, not the festivity itself. So it is quite a stretch and silly to think the EU is trying to cancel Christmas or ban people from using the word.

Thirdly, this is intended to be mindful of people who are not religious, who do not observe Christmas, and/or are not associated to Christianity in some way. Obviously, if you are speaking to people who observe the holiday, you would use the word and wish them a happy Christmas. But just as a Muslim would not wish a non-muslim a happy Ramadan, why would you with a happy Christmas to people who do not observe it?

The idea here is that in public spheres such as the work place, school, and in the media, instead of referring to Christmas when people go on vacation in December, it would be more inclusive to simply say happy holidays. In that way, this would include other celebrations that take place around the same time too.
