On December 02, 2020, Swimming in the Stars was released as a single to promote the second re-issue of the Glory album. It was written and produced by Matthew Koma and Dan Book with additional writing by Alexei Misou. Emily Wright was the vocal producer and Klara Elias provided background vocals. It was written in 2015 and recorded in 2016, but didn't make the cut of the album tracklist.

According to RCA Records, the song was released to celebrate Britney's 39th birthday, and they announced it would be included on the upcoming re-release of the Glory album, which came out on December 11, along with other unreleased tracks and images.

A visualizer was uploaded to her official channel the day of its release, where it's reached over 5M views.

 

Back in 2015 Matthew Koma talked to PopCrush about his experience working with Britney

“She’s extremely talented. It’s funny getting to work with her sometimes, you know, because you just think about the history and how much of pop music is influenced today by things she’s done and invented. It’s super surreal to sit there and hear Britney Spears sing one of your songs. It’s like — it’s one of those things on the checklist. You know, I checked off Kelly Clarkson too. There are very few of those marquee artists where it’s like, okay, check, that’s really cool. It just feels like…it holds a different weight.”

Since a few weeks earlier, Urban Outfitters had already announced a vinyl for the then unreleased track as part of the "11/11 Singles Day", which became available for pre-order on November 11, but didn't ship until January 2021. The cover of the single was a previously unreleased picture from the David LaChapelle 2016 photoshoot, where we can see Britney at the beach with a night sky behind her, wearing a golden attire, while covering her mouth with her hand, and broken chains around her feet.

The song only charted at component charts in some countries, including the US Digital Song Sales chart where it peaked at #18.

well yeah, the release timing was shady, but the song is beautiful.. I love the mystical, dreamy vibe.. and the lyrics are amazing

Never understood the hating of the vocal production of the song. I mean, it’s the same producer of MOTM and I think the two songs compliment each other quite nicely and share similar production. I don’t think the background vocalist takes away from the song, I think she compliments Britney beautifully and echos her nicely. She never tries to “be Britney” like myah. If anything she reminds me more of the background vocals in DLMBTLTK. The song is so distinctly Glory and I just loved everything about that era including getting a peek of what it was “supposed to be” with this rerelease.

Yes. I know. The timing was extremely sus. But I’m truly just talking about the song here and nothing more.

With all that said, this song is lowkey one of my favorite Britney songs. It was nice to hear something unreleased that was officially released. That hasn’t happened since And Then We Kiss(?). It’s just amazing and I love it

 

unrelated but kinda related, does anyone have the image of just the beach? That was released as the the back of the vinyl but I’m looking for the actual digital file

Tbh I agree the song is beautiful and they didn’t pitch the background vocals or anything they just heavily merged them but there’s just parts of it where it’s clear they used what they had of her vocals and obviously she wasn’t working and didn’t recut any of it but I listen to it and have the vinyl it’s a beautiful track in general. The vinyl back cover I have never seen the digital version anywhere unfortunately it wasn’t part of the press kit
