HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Eight people died Friday night and hundreds of others were injured during the opening night of a popular weekend music festival at NRG Park, authorities said.

It happened at the third-annual Astroworld Festival, a sold-out concert event featuring multiple acts.

The worst of the incident began around 9:15 p.m. when the crowd of approximately 50,000 concert-goers began to move toward the front of the stage, according to Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña.

"The crowd began to compress toward the front of the stage, and people began to panic," Peña said.''

we had a stampede at a festival that lead to people dying a couple years ago in Germany. What a waste and avoidable way to die. RIP.

Sad to see this and also sad to the the media and gossip stampede on Twitter enjoying serving the drama. Our society is sick and it's highly contagious even without physical contact.

This is heartbreaking. Concerts are supposed to be occasions for joy and excitement. However, there are so many people that simply don’t know how to behave. This is really sad 😞

Reminds me of a similar incident that happened in a concert here in Argentina a few years ago. My condolences to their families.

I could not watch that stampede video till the end... That's awful. Obviously I'm sorry for all the dead people, but his fans are the ones to blame. YOU CANNOT RUN OVER PEOPLE, let alone leaving them trapped behind you. That's nuts. That's basic empathy for others. People are crazy. And they are all adults. They all should be held accountable.

I would be embarrassed to admit I was ever at a Travis Scott concert

There should be limit of how many people can attend the event. If security can secure the place, then there shouldn't be so many people period.

I would have such an anxiety knowing that there's so many people surrounding me  and I don't have social anxiety usually.
