The only VMA performances I remember from the last 20 years are Britney’s, Gaga’s 2009 Paparazzi performance, Miley’s 2013 performance, and Beyoncé’s like 10 minute performance from 2016 (and that was mainly because it very much upstaged Britney’s performance and I remember all of us being mad at the placement in the performance lineup).

Yes I do remember that... but looking back I still feel like Britney’s is more iconic... she literally doesn’t need the extravagant set pieces to get what she needs to get across... she has the one screen and shown that she has handlers and she wants to push them away.. simply iconic... my girl needs to do some real live performances though is she ever does a come back... that’s all she needs.

As someone who remembers watching this performance live when it first aired ( every time I type that I feel old) I’d have to agree 100%. This VMA performance was the most iconic for us millennials.

I remember watching it for the first time it aired, chills everywhere. Today's kid won't understand the anticipation kids like me used to have when she used to perform if you miss it you miss it was the deal back in those days. Her snake performance still being remembered is truly iconic, no huge set up or lots of dancers because girl doesn't need one.

I love that if you say Britney’s performance at the VMA I’d THE iconic moment and the answer would literally be ‘which one?’. 2000, 2001, 2003 and even 2007 are all undeniable pop culture moments.
