How do you feel knowing that half her career is a lie?

I will say as of recent the hardest thing for me, is realizing her story arc that I once found so inspirational (hit rock bottom but rose from the ashes) is all a lie, she’s been at rock bottom since the mid 00s….

That inspirational story really inspired me as a teen, I had a hard upbringing so for me britney was a hero. I was bullied and constantly ridiculed but I knew one day I was gonna have my Britney vma 2008 moment where I’m loved and finally appreciated.

at my summer job that I hated in 2016, I swear if it wasn’t for my love of Britney I wouldn’t I have been able to do it

the “if Britney can survive 2007…” really stuck with me, so I convinced myself I could accomplish anything based off that

well that line really hits different now doesn’t it

I well say this, I still find her story inspiring, Britney’s case literally reminds me off one of those 10 year abduction stories, where the woman are doing everything they can to survive, and try to escape whenever they can.

with that said, Britney’s strength to withstand all she has while staying absolutely beautiful in the public eye is a challenge not even the average abductee has to deal with and she deserves all the praise for that  (I’m not at all comparing tragedies) 

It’s like faking a smile when you go to work everyday accept well ya know…

One of the things I’ve always loved most about her is her humanity, her resilience and her strength. I of course became a fan of her because of her music. I grew up with her music. She was my first concert. But when I started to grow up, it started to become less about THE Britney Spears and more about Britney the person. Her music became second place to me when I saw what the media and fans (yea fans too) were doing to her. Fandom can be extremely toxic and demanding…It’s hard for some fans to see that behind the idol lies a human being who so happens to have a career that is public. 
 

I have been extremely tempted to go to her tours and almost bought VIP for Las Vegas but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it when I knew (not to the degree we now know but it was obvious) she was being forced to perform…But I appreciate and love her music that she has shown she’s passionate about. 
 

And I don’t know, I’ve never envisioned that I would have my “Britney moment”when our lives experiences are so vastly different…Emotionally though, she has been a great support in my life - in the sense that to me it’s almost inhuman her strength, her will to fight and overcome and her resilience through everything she has gone though. So many times I’ve wanted to give up and even though it sounds corny, her courage, her outlook of life, her constant hope in a hopeless world that screams hopelessness from everywhere,  has given me faith and will to fight in my life.

It feels weird, although tbh there were some clues before that she didn't care that much about her career as a musician and that people were manipulating her. I remember thinking that as far back as the Circus era, although I feel like Britney did a good job of staying professional, especially during the Circus Tour. But anyone with a keen eye knew that something was slightly off even back then.

It almost feels like a confirmation. Half her career has been a mystery, but we always knew something was up. From the change in personality, dancing, appearance. I never thought we’d have all the theories validated. 
 

She actually inspires me even more than the fake 2007/rising Hollywood story. She’s been so strong for 13 years and has endured so much, yet there’s still a fire in her. The new saying should be Britney can make it through 2007-2020, you can make it through the day

This, a million times over. It’s a testament to the extremes of human resiliency and the will to survive.  It’s honestly a feat of physical and mental strength that she has accomplished so much in the face of such cruelty.  It seems superhuman, in many ways.

For me it now makes sense why she has performed and looked the way she has:

it was obviously cause of her corrupt conservatorship.

I used to think she was incompetent, lazy and ditzy

but sadly now I know the truth.

How do I feel knowing half of her career is a lie? Pretty ****ty honestly. It was already ****ty before I knew the awfulness of it all, but I still pushed my misgivings to the back of my mind so that I could enjoy her artistry, almost out of a sense of duty. But now seeing any video or photo of her from 2008 up until now is borderline triggering for me. I still listen to her music, though, because my love for her is undying

am i ask how old you are? - think you said in another thread you're a little younger than most of us here; i think most of us here are around our above 30.

I don't think that makes her career "a lie". It's just the perception that you and all of us had is now different, but tbh, conservatorship or not, with every artist there's many things going on behind the scenes that we don't know, but that doesn't take away from the effect they had in the public.

It's really impossible to compare her situation to others, because I don't think there's ever been a music star living in a conservatorship for this long, or in a conservatorship at all, thus any comparison will feel like diminishing Britney's situation, but I can't help but think of certain artists I follow. Here in Mexico we have this singer Fey who was very popular throughout her first three eras, she was basically the Mexican Britney, before Britney was even Britney (in 1998 she was already in her third era). Massive success, hit after hit, she broke records of consecutive sold out shows in the biggest stadiums, etc. Until she just had to stop, take a break, give a complete 180º shift to her music, and she never really got back again to that amount of success as in the beginning, but she's now much more happy. Thing is, it turned out she was being very, very miserable, especially towards the third era. She was overworked, her boyfriend who was her manager too only cared about her for her career, so she really struggled in her personal life too, and it turned out she didn't even like most of her songs by that point. It feels weird hearing her in interviews, and then you look back at videos from that era and she looks so happy, so alive, the public loved her, she marked so many lives and no one had any idea of what she was going through. But even now she's at peace with all of that, and she doesn't regret because of what it brought to her fans, and even with the songs she didn't like back then, she now sees them differently, and keeps performing them because she's way past all of the hard moments from those days, and knows they're important for her fans.

There's another singer too, Gloria Trevi, who was living a hell in hands of her manager for the most part of her career in the 90's. A very spiky situation that involved him forming a clan of girls, many of them underage, with the excuse of preparing them to be as successful as her, and with whom she was also romantically involved/abused. There was a lot of control and oppression going on, in the outside she was this super successful singer, with lots of hits, movies, she even hosted her own tv show, but behind the scenes she was isolated from friends and family, she was not allowed to have a boyfriend or speak to anyone. Some of the girls from the group were es***ting her from a tv set where she would have an interview, to her dressing room to make sure she wouldn't speak to anyone. Her fifth album is very obscure and she rarely performs songs from it, because some of the songs even touch in the topic of suicide. The situation was very awful, nightmarish, many of the girls got pregnant of this guy, including Gloria, whose baby passed away in the middle of this situation. She ultimately ended up in jail, because some of the girls accused her of being complicit of the manager for trafficking with the girls, and she spent 4 years in jail just waiting for a sentence (she was found not guilty and released). But anyways, the point is, throughout the 90's her life was a nightmare, many of her biggest hits were actually love songs / heartbreak songs dedicated to this monster that was her manager, and she still has to perform them these days. But she looks back at it, and she always says that if she didn't live all of that, she wouldn't be where she is now (she's had an even more successful career ever since she got out of jail). And she understands that many of her fans met her during those first eras of her career, and she understands the impact her music had in all of them. Obviously the difference with Britney is that if Gloria had control in something was in the music she was recording. She writes most of her songs, and she's always had the freedom to put out the songs she wants to.

 

So I don't know, I feel like until we hear directly from Britney in a longer interview or post how she really feels about each of the projects she's done or was forced to do these years, there's nothing to feel guilty about. As I've said, of course there's moments where you can see she's clearly not feeling it, like most of FF era, but then you see others moments like through 2015 and 2016, when she was killing it onstage, and she really looked like she was enjoying herself, so it seems that at least at times, her music career was one of the few things that kept her afloat in the middle of this madness. Like, what would've been preferable for her, to stay at home hearing her father's insults, drugging her up, etc, or being onstage seeing the crowd go crazy with her music? Conservatorship or not, she really moved on from the dark times where she was followed by paparazzi 24/7 and was able to keep doing awesome things onstage and in the studio. It's really unfair to claim that everything she's achieved or done since 2008 was thanks to her father, or a product of the conservatorship, as if he was the genius telling her how to perform and how to look at the camera, and how to sing, etc. You can put anyone under a conservatorship, and they won't be able to do what Britney has done, I don't think anyone would be able to endure that situation for so long.

You get something awful thrown at you — an illness, career failure, loss of a loved one — and you fight to solve or survive it. And then you think that just maybe you’ve earned a break. That maybe it’s your turn to be happy and you get all optimistic that things are starting to work out. And then everything goes to hell again and you’re like

I mean, Britney never lied...you just had to read between the lines. The symbolism is in the videos. I think the revelations from her testimony reframes everything but we can still see Britney did enjoy Vegas for a while.

Do not make your life dependant of someone else's. Self inspect yourself and why you need to do this. Find tour own value. Easier said than done,tales time, but for your own mental health sake the process should be started.
