Of course she can, the point is the court has to aprove it and it has to go through the conservatorship of the state since Britney doesn't have access to her money.  During the Judge Reva Goetz era of the conservatorship she tried to retain counsel 3 times, 2 times she was denied by the court and the other her father bought or threatened the lawyer it's not very clear but he resigned after talking to her father, and considering how judge Reva completely destroyed the career of Jon Eardley -the second lawyer she tried to hire- when he tried to bring the case to federal court on behalf of Britney I could understand why the next lawyer gave up so easily specially considering he was an important one. When it comes to Judge Penny era I have no idea if Britney ever tried to hire any lawyer but during the open hearing Penny didn't seem to be against the idea so I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I feel like the July 14th hearing may be pushed back to give Britneys new lawyer time. However, hopefully the new lawyer would simply petition to terminate.
