Was Britney Spears and her label inspired by Billie Pipers success?

Recommended Posts

Billie Piper was an british pop star who released her UK number one hits "Because We Want" To and "Girlfriend" along with her debut album "Honey To The B" in 1998. We often credit Britney for doing teenage bubblegum pop first, but Billie actually came out before Britney, her 2 singles were released before BOM (song) and her debut album came out just days after BOM (song) was released. Billies style is really similiar to Britneys too and she performs as a dancer more than as a singer. Could Jive records have been inspired by her success in the UK and Europe, since Billie was not very successfull in the US, there was empty spot for Britney. Billie Piper quit pop music in 2001, her true passion was acting and she didn't really enjoy that life style of a pop star. Later she has appeared in Doctor Who as Rose and other movies and stuff. What do you think? Is Billie Piper the original teenage pop artist

Hmm I don’t think so, Britney had been signed to Jive and started recording for her debut since 1997, she also met with Max Martin to record with him in Sweden in 1998. Billie wasn’t that successful in the US, maybe if she was Britney might have been inspired by her but she debuted a few months before Britney released Baby One More Time. I’m more inclined to say Britney might have been inspired by Robyn.

I love BP! In '08 I was stanning the anticipation of her Doctor Who return hard. I loved her in seasons 1-2.

She's also recently emphasised with Brit, saying she can relate (on a smaller scale) to Framing Britney Spears. I think she also said Brit's c-ship situation sounds horrid or something.

I'm certain one time I locked eyes with her in London! She had light brown hair (maybe with a few blonde highlights), so I didn't recognise her at first. Apparently she was filming nearby around the time, so it likely was her.

I mean it’s a possibility but I feel Britney was crafted by the Backstreet Boys and the Spice Girls. There was a market for teenagers and kids and she happened to be signed at the right time for that. I’m sure they signed her knowing they could market Britney with her charm and Disney experience as just that. That lady even said they were attempting to market her as your best friend in Framing Britney. She had that charm and charisma and the music was clearly inspired by that. Britney sold what most teenage girls at that age experience which is being young but exploring the fun side of adulting aka s**. Naughty but nice. Everything today is so PC and probably rightfully so as there are many predators in this world. Where it’s very relatable, she suffered much criticism and even if another girl tried what Brit did, the shock value is gone lol. It was new and had all the ingredients to sell massively at that point in time. So massive that over twenty years later it’s still the blueprint in pop music standards at many levels.

Nah Britney (jive) was inspired by Swedish teen pop star Robyn. Robyn was supposed to be “the girl next door” **** teen pop star but she refused to play that role, Britney agreed, and the rest is history

Britney wasn't inspired by Robyn as a performer though, considering performing was a big part of her teen brand.

As performers, Britney and Robyn couldn't be more different.

I never said as a performer. But in terms of Britney's early musical style, then possibly as Robyn originally worked with Max Martin on her debut album.

Billie was a local act.

Jive had a lot of experience with Samantha Fox in late 1980s as they managed to have a lot of success with her worldwide, but also Fox covered a lot of different music styles, she did pop, dance, house, r'n'b. Let's not forget the influence of her video "Hurt me, hurt me" on "Boys". Fox was Jive's biggest female act and they learned a lot on her and that influenced their future female acts. What they did wrong with Fox was done right with Britney.

Fair points. Even though Billie was not that huge outside UK i feel like her label couldve easily taken some inspiration from her early bops and think that theres a singer like that missing from america. Shes probably not the number one inspiration but I find her interestingly similiar to Britney and I can easily see Britney singing her songs

Yeah they showed her Robyn’s videos  and she asked why she isn’t dancing in the videos as her music makes her want to dance

i didn't know her but her music sounds a lot like the spice girls, so probably billie was crafted after them and britney was the american solo bet of Jive with pop music's sound of the moment, britney just happened to be the most succesfull out of all of them because of her personal touch and well many other things mentioned here, mostly controversy, beauty, talent and max martin
