Why is Dua Lipa so overrated?

I know it was you featured it :haha_britney_laugh_lol_lmao_hehe_haha_bw_black_white:

But either way, if you want Exhale to be a positive place, why feature topics that are specifically designed to be negative?

It makes it annoying to even come on here. When I first signed up, this was a pretty positive place, but it’s turning really negative which is why I disappeared for a while. When everything in the world is so negative all the time, why would we want to add to that kind of attitude?

The thing is there are plenty of other threads, heck I've posted a bunch of vanilla as threads over the past few days, but I haven't you in any of them? :oprah_well_there_you_have_it_proof_see_hand:

You can easily skip this thread and not read it.

I wanna be there when you touch fire

You’re right. I haven’t been in many threads. But I decided to basically keep my comments limited. I don’t need negativity and people like to throw shade every chance they get. I can skip this thread. I didn’t even reply to the OP. But I came on here specifically to ask this question. Now I have my answer I guess. :oprah_well_there_you_have_it_proof_see_hand:

Imagine being the op, forever pressed and mad in every single topic, talking **** about Dua Lipa and then posting some boring *** video of some chick standing still lipsynching for her life to elevator music.

Ok sis go off with your horrid tastes

You cannot say she's "boring" when she's been giving her all since "Don't Start Now". She single-handedly entertained the whole world during the pandemic while the rest of the popstars were scared hiding under their beds! :nyschool_new_york_miss_tiffany_pollard_preaching_telling_talking_hand:

She definitely has a..... "subdued" vibe, let's say, but that only makes her more interesting. And her voice is gorge. And the videos! The videos... You ungrateful bish. :gtfo_britney_pink_wig_2007_mad_annoyed_irritated_stare:

The most entertaining thing about her is calling her Dula Peep... and she didn't even start that lmao.

seriously though, I don't dislike her, I just HATE the fact that E•MO•TION was for the most part slept on. It deserved all the Grammy's and talk that Future Nostalgia is getting. It did the whole retro thing WAY before anyone even knew who Dula Peep was. Retro pop is incredibly common these days, so while FN is a great album, it's not all that original or fresh in the way E•MO•TION was upon release.

if you listened to any sophie ellix bextor or kylie minogue album you'd realize than dua lipa is just a bland, flavorless, unseasoned, dull, generic, flat, insipid, weak, plain, unappetizing and politically correct version of them, very boring if you ask me, where is the vibe, where is the groove??? where is the soul ???

DUA LIPA IS SO MID

Well with only Bebe R., Ariana, Doja Cat and whoever else is out there as competition...

In general the level is low nowadays

A positive place? Sweetie you should have seen the negative hell of a place, the forum was during the Chromatica era :deadbanana_pbj_peanut_butter_jelly_time_yellow:

There's no competition, plus there's no superstars, let's be honest.

The current generation Z isn't really fame hungry, cutthroat and being told by labels, there could only be one, so stand out and make noise.

This generation is truly the era of there's room for everyone, which wasn't there when we were growing up.

Now I do see what you mean. Dua's not perfect, by all means, especially if you're COMPARING her to previous pop stars like Britney. But do we have to compare her though? Doesn't she deserve the success she's been enjoying for a while now? When people are calling her the main pop girl and praise her music, etc, you need to acknowledge a lot of things that contribute to that. I'll be referring to the commercial music scene because there are obviously other artists that are probably even more talented than Dua, I'm sure of this. However, I want you to keep in mind one thing: successful artists normally represent the times and their music reflects that. Moreover, let's narrow it down to her career.

So why does Dua Lipa deserve her success with Future Nostalgia?

Future Nostalgia & the 80's disco wave

Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia by Dragonsedits on DeviantArt

Dua's first album was successful and introduced her to the world as a hit-maker. However, the album lacked artistic vision; sonically it didn't provide much substance: it was pretty basic. Future Nostalgia was her sophomore album and we all know the pressure on artists to outgrow themselves: it's usually a hit or miss so whatever Dua was going to release, was either going to destroy her career or establish herself as a pop artist. Thankfully, Future Nostalgia proved everyone wrong and the latter occurred.

Dua's not the first one to sample disco music from the 80s so in that sense, there isn't anything groundbreaking. However, music can be a powerful tool to shape the cultural aspect of a year by creating a specific aesthetic that people in the future will reminiscent when they recall 2020. In that sense, Dua alongside Abel was the first to introduce the disco wave in 2020. It went on to dominate the charts and provide people with escapism in times of crisis. The album itself is a coherent pop piece that very well captures the 2020 zeitgeist.

Confesiones tirado en la pista de baile: [ Future Nostalgia ] Dua Lipa se corona como reina del pop con un disco magistral

By intertwining nostalgia with the future, Dua brought something to the pop scene that had been missing for a while. Disco strings, heavy bass guitar, funk, electro/dance/synth pop. Dua revived the pop chorus and the incredible hooks: Don't start now, Physical, Cool, Pretty please, Hallucinate, Break my heart, Love again, Levitating. This album was a cultural reset for Dua Lipa and the pop scene in 2020.

During the era she also released Fever, Prisoner with Miley, Real Groove with Kylie, the bonus tracks from the Moonlight edition, and many collabs from Club Future Nostalgia. Dua was also very good at capturing the synthwave/vaporwave aesthetic with influences from 1950s-1990s pop culture. The sound of Future Nostalgia resonates with that.

Music videos

Dua really stepped up her music video game as well. The videos complemented the era's future nostalgia aesthetic which helped listeners fully paint the picture and immerse themselves in her funky disco world.

Add to the list the amazing lyrics/animated videos as well.

Current pop scene, influence & the pandemic

Pop music has been on the decline for a while now and hip-hop/rap are dominating among the current generation and that's not bad news at all! The disappearance of certain pop icons and the pandemic created a space for pop stars and Dua truly embraced it despite initial hesitance. The layering of events gave opportunity to Dua to truly shine and have her moment. This is a rare occasion given how spoon-fed we are with constant music releases these days. In other words, the stars aligned in favour of Dua and allowed her to establish something unique during a pandemic.

Live performances & stage presence

Dua was heavily judged for her lack of stage presence and became the butt of the joke for the Internet. She embraced the criticism, learnt from it and evolved as a performer. Is she the best? No, but as she says in one of her songs, she 'did a full 180.' For that alone, she deserves the respect for having enough balls to acknowledge a flaw and work hard to improve yourself.

And thus, for this amazing album rollout (something we haven't witnessed in pop music for a while), her artistic growth, her unique voice and distinctive looks, her consistency and hard-work, Dua Lipa deserves her current success and more! It's interesting to see what she's got up her sleeve for the tour and what will happen once the era is over. However, until then, let's enjoy an era that we will look back to in the future: this is our Future Nostalgia.

THIS!!!!!!!!! Even I didn't like Dua in the first place. It was this era that she changed everyone's opinion on her. You might not like her, but you should give props to her for taking the criticism and horrifying backlash she received and turned it into something good. She is an amazing pop artist and we shall continue to stream one of the greatest eras of the past 5 years :saycheese_make_me_mm_hat_smile_peace_sign_grin_glory_britney:
