Why is Dua Lipa so overrated?

The way I cackled at this and howled when I played the video. Looks like the wax museum came alive for one night :gimmemoar_britney_hat_more_gimme_giggle_haha_hehe_lol_2007_vmas_lmao:

The whole thing is so non-descript and bland and almost nightmare-like, but it sends me that the op thought this performance was really something, like he really needed to share this :deadbanana_pbj_peanut_butter_jelly_time_yellow:

The absolute foolishness on this forum:rlynow_britney_really_clasped_um_ok_seriously:

Now I do see what you mean. Dua's not perfect, by all means, especially if you're COMPARING her to previous pop stars like Britney. But do we have to compare her though? Doesn't she deserve the success she's been enjoying for a while now? When people are calling her the main pop girl and praise her music, etc, you need to acknowledge a lot of things that contribute to that. I'll be referring to the commercial music scene because there are obviously other artists that are probably even more talented than Dua, I'm sure of this. However, I want you to keep in mind one thing: successful artists normally represent the times and their music reflects that. Moreover, let's narrow it down to her career.

So why does Dua Lipa deserve her success with Future Nostalgia?

Future Nostalgia & the 80's disco wave

Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia by Dragonsedits on DeviantArt

Dua's first album was successful and introduced her to the world as a hit-maker. However, the album lacked artistic vision; sonically it didn't provide much substance: it was pretty basic. Future Nostalgia was her sophomore album and we all know the pressure on artists to outgrow themselves: it's usually a hit or miss so whatever Dua was going to release, was either going to destroy her career or establish herself as a pop artist. Thankfully, Future Nostalgia proved everyone wrong and the latter occurred.

Dua's not the first one to sample disco music from the 80s so in that sense, there isn't anything groundbreaking. However, music can be a powerful tool to shape the cultural aspect of a year by creating a specific aesthetic that people in the future will reminiscent when they recall 2020. In that sense, Dua alongside Abel was the first to introduce the disco wave in 2020. It went on to dominate the charts and provide people with escapism in times of crisis. The album itself is a coherent pop piece that very well captures the 2020 zeitgeist.

Confesiones tirado en la pista de baile: [ Future Nostalgia ] Dua Lipa se corona como reina del pop con un disco magistral

By intertwining nostalgia with the future, Dua brought something to the pop scene that had been missing for a while. Disco strings, heavy bass guitar, funk, electro/dance/synth pop. Dua revived the pop chorus and the incredible hooks: Don't start now, Physical, Cool, Pretty please, Hallucinate, Break my heart, Love again, Levitating. This album was a cultural reset for Dua Lipa and the pop scene in 2020.

During the era she also released Fever, Prisoner with Miley, Real Groove with Kylie, the bonus tracks from the Moonlight edition, and many collabs from Club Future Nostalgia. Dua was also very good at capturing the synthwave/vaporwave aesthetic with influences from 1950s-1990s pop culture. The sound of Future Nostalgia resonates with that.

Music videos

Dua really stepped up her music video game as well. The videos complemented the era's future nostalgia aesthetic which helped listeners fully paint the picture and immerse themselves in her funky disco world.

Add to the list the amazing lyrics/animated videos as well.

Current pop scene, influence & the pandemic

Pop music has been on the decline for a while now and hip-hop/rap are dominating among the current generation and that's not bad news at all! The disappearance of certain pop icons and the pandemic created a space for pop stars and Dua truly embraced it despite initial hesitance. The layering of events gave opportunity to Dua to truly shine and have her moment. This is a rare occasion given how spoon-fed we are with constant music releases these days. In other words, the stars aligned in favour of Dua and allowed her to establish something unique during a pandemic.

Live performances & stage presence

Dua was heavily judged for her lack of stage presence and became the butt of the joke for the Internet. She embraced the criticism, learnt from it and evolved as a performer. Is she the best? No, but as she says in one of her songs, she 'did a full 180.' For that alone, she deserves the respect for having enough balls to acknowledge a flaw and work hard to improve yourself.

And thus, for this amazing album rollout (something we haven't witnessed in pop music for a while), her artistic growth, her unique voice and distinctive looks, her consistency and hard-work, Dua Lipa deserves her current success and more! It's interesting to see what she's got up her sleeve for the tour and what will happen once the era is over. However, until then, let's enjoy an era that we will look back to in the future: this is our Future Nostalgia.

In times when travelling and socialising were limited, Dua Lipa gave to the world a form of escapism people can enjoy and uplift their spirits! :tiffdrink_miss_ms_ny_new_york_drinking_sips_sipping_tea_straw:

Imagine being the op, forever pressed and mad in every single topic, talking **** about Dula Lipa and then posting some boring *** video of some chick standing still lipsynching for her life to elevator music.

Ok sis go off with your horrid tastes

a britney fan talking about boring lipsync performances when britney hasn't been able to pull off a great/entertaining performance in like 15 years , the audacity... and god knows how much i love britney but lol, the audacity. get some self-awareness please

if you only listen to generic mainstream corporate cookie-cutter basic pop stop then you are banned from using the word "taste". You aren't qualified enough to talk about music taste. Pop fans acting like music experts always makes me laugh. Y'all don't even know anything about music outside of Spotify's Top Hits playlists and some pitchfork recommendations LMAO. Please stfu. You're ridiculous. And Dua Lipa's music sounds like the music you hear in Ikea's commercials, there's nothing interesting about it, it's literally the stuff you hear at malls or forever21,  enjoy ur payolacore

LOL you're obviously hurt sweetie which is why you have to come for brit lol. Even current Brit knows not to stand still like a mannequin while miming badly to corny, bland, generic music for a paid crowd. It's very telling that you only focused on the "lipsynching" part of my diss. The clip you embedded is absolutely horrid, the absolute minimum amount of work any human would ever be expected to do during a song performance ;literally just stand there , mime and pretend to have a soul. But still the chick failed to do just the bare minimum and this is what you're comparing to Dua? LMAO

The fact that you think Britney has not performed well for a decade plus shows just how much a fan you are btw? :jl_jamie_lynn_awkward_cringe_eek:

You just posted the most generic, nightmare inducing joke of a pop song and performance but you want to call my tastes into question? Lmao at you projecting all your tacky opinions and attitudes about music onto me. Bye :deadbanana_pbj_peanut_butter_jelly_time_yellow:
